Confirmed: Universal Orlando Slashes Theme Park Hours, Will Close as Early as 6:00 P.M.

Imagine spending the afternoon at Universal Studios Florida, watching the clock approach 5:00 p.m., and realizing your theme park day is about to get significantly more complicated.

That's the reality during Halloween Horror Nights season.

Universal Studios Florida routinely closes at 5:00 p.m. on Halloween Horror Nights dates so the park can prepare for its separately ticketed nighttime event. Regular guests who aren't attending have to find something else to do.

Usually, you'd think the obvious answer would be heading next door to Islands of Adventure.

In September, however, that might only buy you a few more hours.

Islands of Adventure is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. on most dates during the month. There are also a couple of 7:00 p.m. closings.

Then September 23 takes things even further.

Islands of Adventure closes at 6:00 p.m. that evening.

Meanwhile, Epic Universe is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. most nights during September.

Put everything together, and Universal Orlando has a nighttime problem during one of its most popular seasons.

Halloween Horror Nights Changes Everything

Halloween Horror Nights is understandably the priority at Universal Studios Florida during the fall.

The event draws enormous crowds and requires Universal to transition the park between daytime operations and the Halloween event.

A 5:00 p.m. closing is nothing unusual.

Guests planning their trips should know about it, particularly if they're purchasing a regular daytime ticket without Halloween Horror Nights admission.

What is more surprising is how early Universal's other parks are closing.

When one major theme park is unavailable after 5:00 p.m., you'd expect another to remain open considerably later.

Instead, Islands of Adventure will frequently close only three hours later.

September 23 Stands Out

The September 23 schedule is particularly striking.

Islands of Adventure is scheduled to close at 6:00 p.m.

That's closer to a dinner reservation than what many vacationers probably picture as theme park closing time.

It also means guests won't have much opportunity to enjoy Islands of Adventure after dark.

That's a shame considering some of the park's biggest attractions become especially exciting at night.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster is one obvious example. Racing around the coaster's outdoor track feels different once the sun goes down.

Hogsmeade also changes after dark as the area's lighting creates a completely different atmosphere.

Early closing times remove much of that experience.

Epic Universe Has Short Nights, Too

Universal Orlando now has something it didn't have before May 2025: a third major theme park.

Epic Universe was supposed to change how people approach a Universal vacation, and it has.

Visitors can easily spend several days moving between Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe.

Yet the resort's newest park is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. most nights during September.

Epic Universe is arguably the Universal park where nighttime matters most.

Celestial Park's lighting, fountains and colorful architecture take on a completely different appearance after sunset. The park was made to be seen at night.

Guests should have more than a brief window to enjoy it that way.

Disney Shows Why These Hours Feel So Short

Walt Disney World deals with essentially the same operational challenge during Halloween season.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes over Magic Kingdom on select nights, forcing regular daytime guests to leave earlier.

Disney still provides other nighttime options.

EPCOT doesn't suddenly start regularly closing at 7:00 p.m. because Magic Kingdom has a Halloween party. Disney's Hollywood Studios doesn't need to shut down at 8:00 p.m. simply because another park has a separately ticketed event.

Guests can move somewhere else and continue their night.

Universal should be able to offer the same basic flexibility.

Halloween Horror Nights guests already have their nighttime destination. It's everyone else who gets left with fewer options.

Universal Wants Longer Vacations

This matters because Universal Orlando isn't positioning itself as a quick side trip anymore.

Epic Universe changed that conversation.

Universal wants families booking its hotels, purchasing multi-day tickets and spending more of their Orlando vacation on Universal property.

That's exactly why operating hours matter.

If guests are being encouraged to dedicate three, four or even more days to Universal Orlando, they should have opportunities to experience its parks during both the daytime and nighttime.

An 8:00 p.m. closing already limits those opportunities.

A 7:00 p.m. closing makes the situation worse.

And closing Islands of Adventure at 6:00 p.m. is incredibly early for a major Orlando theme park.

Universal Orlando has spent billions expanding its theme park destination and challenging Disney for a bigger share of Orlando vacations.

Now it needs operating hours that feel worthy of that competition.

Brittni is a Disney and Universal fan; one of her favorite things at both parks is collecting popcorn buckets. While at Disney World Resort, Brittni meets the princesses and rides Kilimanjaro Safaris. At Universal, Brittni enjoys the Minions and watching Animal Actors on Location! When not at Disney World Resort or Universal Orlando, Brittni spends time with her family and pets.
