Space Mountain is one of the most iconic attractions at Walt Disney World drawing popularity from fans of all ages (and long wait times) since the attraction opened in Tomorrowland in 1975. While this popular space-themed roller coaster has undergone a number of updates and refurbishments over the years, it seems another update may be around the corner as construction permits have been filed for the area where the attraction sits.
A recent permit filed for work to be done at 4950 N. World Drive indicates the location of Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom. While Disney has not announced a refurbishment or closure for the attraction, the permit calls for labor, material and/or electrical for construction, which has been contracted out to the Buena Vista Construction Company.
In the past, work has been done on the exterior of Space Mountain without requiring the inside of the building and the ride area or gift shop to be closed. As a white structure that has been at the Disney theme park for a number of years, the exterior of Space Mountain can sometimes experience some wear and tear. Typically a fresh coat of paint can fix this though, so where the recently filed permit calls for electrical materials it is likely that the work will take place either inside the mountain or on the lights that illuminate the attraction at night.
Tomorrowland is currently experiencing the ongoing construction of the new TRON attraction, which while a duplicate of a ride from Shanghai Disneyland has no official opening timeline announced so far.
Elsewhere in the Magic Kingdom, Splash Mountain recently underwent its usual annual refurbishment during the winter months and has just reopened to Guests a couple of weeks ago. While Splash Mountain is set to be re-themed to The Princess and the Frog, no announcements have been made so far for when the transformation will take place.
