Star Wars is heading somewhere it has never gone before.
Disney and Lucasfilm have unveiled the first official look at Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, a brand-new Welsh-language version of George Lucas' original Star Wars film (1977), which will introduce the iconic adventure to audiences in a completely new way.
The project was announced by Disney, Lucasfilm, Welsh broadcaster S4C, and Creative Wales, marking the first time the original movie has been officially redubbed in Welsh.
The official teaser shared by S4C gives fans their first glimpse at the translated opening crawl, including the famous phrase “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” which becomes “Amser maith yn ôl, mewn galaeth bell, bell i ffwrdd.”

The release comes as part of the celebrations surrounding Star Wars‘ 50th anniversary in 2027.
Since George Lucas' original film arrived in theaters, the franchise has grown from a single movie into a global phenomenon spanning films, television, animation, comics, novels, video games, merchandise, and theme parks.
Lucasfilm Co-President Lynwen Brennan described the Welsh language as having “such a rich history of storytelling and a beautiful lyrical language,” explaining why the project was a perfect fit for the anniversary celebration.
Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd will not change the story audiences know, but it will offer a completely new way to experience Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (1977).
The film follows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a young farmhand who discovers his connection to the Jedi after meeting Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). Alongside Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), Luke joins the fight against Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) and the Galactic Empire.
The Welsh redub features an all-new cast, including Osian Morgan as Luke Skywalker, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Princess Leia, Matthew Rhys as Han Solo, Rhys Ifans as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader, and Llŷr Ifans as C-3PO.
Additional cast members include Nia Roberts as Aunt Beru, Richard Harrington as Grand Moff Tarkin, Owain Arthur as Red Leader, and Rhodri Meilir as Gold Leader.
Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd premieres on S4C and its streaming platforms on Christmas Day.
