Rey Skywalker's return was supposed to introduce a new era for Star Wars, with Daisy Ridley once again stepping into the role of the Jedi who would rebuild the Order 15 after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
However, while that film remains stuck in development, another female-led story has already arrived — and its premise sounds surprisingly similar to Rey's long-awaited solo adventure.
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi is now streaming on Disney+, continuing the story of Lah Kara, the young Jedi introduced in the original Star Wars: Visions episode of the same name in 2021.
The animated series follows Lah Kara as she searches for worthy Jedi to join her cause in a galaxy where the Jedi Order has fallen. Her journey previously continued in the Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 short “Child of Hope,” which expanded on her story before the new Disney+ series.

The similarities with Rey's planned movie are immediately obvious.
Following The Rise of Skywalker, Rey is expected to return as a Jedi Master attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order and create a new future for the galaxy. Similarly, The Ninth Jedi explores a future where the Jedi have disappeared and one Jedi is fighting to bring them back.
However, the two projects take place in very different corners of the franchise. Unlike Rey's story, The Ninth Jedi exists outside official Star Wars canon, allowing Lucasfilm and Production I.G. to explore an entirely original mythology.
While Rey's movie is expected to take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, The Ninth Jedi is set in the distant future, long after the events of the sequel trilogy.
The comparison is especially interesting because Rey's untitled solo movie has been in development for several years, with limited updates since Daisy Ridley's return was announced. Meanwhile, The Ninth Jedi has already grown from a popular animated short into a full Disney+ series.
For now, Lucasfilm's next theatrical release is Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. Although Daisy Ridley's Rey has been rumored to appear, she is not currently part of the announced cast.
With The Ninth Jedi now expanding Lah Kara's story, Lucasfilm has introduced another possible vision for the future of the Jedi Order — even before Rey's next chapter arrives.
