Disney’s Animal Kingdom has always been a park built on adventure, blending nature and storytelling in a way that no other Disney park does.
From the roaring heights of Expedition Everest to the alien landscapes of Pandora – The World of Avatar, the park immerses guests in worlds both real and imagined. But not every attraction has been a runaway hit, and one that has remained divisive for years is Kali River Rapids.

This whitewater rafting ride, located in the Asia section of the park, is supposed to be a thrilling yet educational experience, taking guests through a river being destroyed by illegal logging. While the message is important, the execution has left some guests wanting more.
Complaints over the years have included the ride’s short duration, the randomness of who actually gets soaked, and the lack of major thrills compared to other Disney water rides. Some have even called for an overhaul, suggesting the ride should either be re-themed or replaced entirely.
Despite the mixed reception, Disney has now confirmed that Kali River Rapids is set to reopen on March 14, 2025 after its annual winter refurbishment. The ride closed in early January for maintenance, as it typically does when cooler temperatures make water rides less popular. While no major changes have been announced, its return means the ride will continue to be part of the park’s lineup for at least another season.

The Bigger Picture: Animal Kingdom’s Evolution
Kali River Rapids’ return is just one piece of a much larger shift happening at Animal Kingdom. Major changes are on the way, with some longtime attractions preparing to close their doors for good.

DinoLand U.S.A. Is on Its Way Out – The prehistoric-themed land is being replaced by Pueblo Esperanza, a massive new area inspired by the Tropical Americas. This expansion will bring an Encanto attraction, as well as an Indiana Jones ride, marking one of the biggest transformations in Animal Kingdom’s history.
-
The Tree of Life Is Getting a New Show – After March 16, 2025, It’s Tough to Be a Bug! will be permanently retired. In its place, a brand-new Zootopia-themed show, Better Zoogether, will debut, bringing Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and other fan-favorite characters into the park.
-
Character Meet-and-Greet Shakeups – Mickey and Minnie are temporarily relocating as their usual spot, Adventurer’s Outpost, undergoes a refurbishment. While a new location hasn’t been officially confirmed, fans can rest assured that they won’t be disappearing from the park.

With so many major changes in the works, it’s clear that Animal Kingdom is evolving into something new. Whether Kali River Rapids will continue to hold its place in the park’s future remains to be seen, but for now, guests can prepare to get soaked once again when it reopens this spring.
