Disney Channel, the home of iconic childhood classics like Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven, and Phineas & Ferb, is preparing to sign off for good—at least in certain regions. Beginning in 2025, The Walt Disney Company will cease broadcasting Disney Channel and Disney Junior in multiple countries, redirecting audiences to its flagship streaming platform, Disney+.
A Shift Toward Streaming Dominance
The decision marks another step in Disney’s ongoing strategy to prioritize streaming services over traditional cable networks. Disney Channel and Disney Junior have already disappeared from airwaves in Australia, Italy, the UK, and South Korea, among other regions. By 2025, more countries will join the list.
“Disney is evolving to meet the needs of its consumers with agility and innovation,” the company said in a statement. The shift reflects broader trends in media consumption, with families increasingly turning to streaming platforms for entertainment.
Disney+ now houses much of Disney Channel’s beloved programming, from nostalgic classics to exclusive new content like Raven’s Home and Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Disney’s move reinforces its commitment to consolidating its audience under the Disney+ umbrella while sunsetting traditional broadcasting in several markets.
The Global Timeline for the End of Disney Channel
Disney Channel and Disney Junior are set to go off the air in France as of January 1, 2025, followed by Spain on January 7, 2025. Meanwhile, Brazil will see Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and other Disney channels like National Geographic and Star Channel cease broadcasting by February 28, 2025. ESPN will remain available in those regions, ensuring that sports fans won’t be left in the dark.
This change isn’t entirely unprecedented. In recent years, Disney has phased out channels like Disney XD, Nat Geo Wild, and FX Movies in select markets, paving the way for this next major step.
