One of the most beloved characters of all time, the sweet, doe-eyed Bambi, is going to be permanently altered in pop media history.

Disney characters are incredibly beloved by fans all around the world, and for good reason. These characters have made their way across our screens and into our hearts and become some of the most beloved characters to grace pop culture.

Perhaps because of how beloved they are, or maybe because of just how ingrained into our collective psychology these characters are, sometimes people enjoy being able to play around with them.

Creative licenses are always fun to see, but even we can admit that some renditions of these characters have gone quite far, in ways that we’re not always certain work.

Most recently, a great example of this is the Winnie the Pooh horror movie that came out in 2023. Blood and Honey is an independent British slasher film that uses our beloved Pooh-bear as the central character for a horror flick. The movie, directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, was not a hit by any means.

It earned a whopping 16% on Metacritic and 2.9 on IMDb. Audiences on Google largely felt it deserved no more than 1 star.

However, the movie was unique enough that Rhys Frake-Waterfield got together enough money to make a second Blood and Honey movie, which was infinitely better reviewed.

The success of this concept of making our favorite Disney characters horror characters has resulted in one more character becoming permanently altered: Bambi.

In the upcoming Bambi: The Reckoning, the lovey-dovey deer becomes a “vicious killing machine,” per all recent reports. They further elaborate that the movie draws inspiration from Felix Salten’s 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods (the same way Blood and Honey drew inspiration from A.A. Milne’s book).

The Bambie horror movie is up next in Umbrella Entertainment’s Twisted Childhood Universe and comprises films that are made using characters whose copyright protections have expired and now live within the public domain for intellectual property.

Fans online have mixed reviews and feelings about the upcoming movie. One wrote, “I’m ready to see Bambi rip open the hunter that took his mother. The revenge story we’ve been waiting for.”

On the other hand, some were less happy. “It was kinda funny with the Winnie the Pooh thing, but now this is already getting kinda annoying.”

Yet another commented, “Sweet Jesus, how many horror versions of Disney owned IPs are we getting?”

ITN Studios and Jagged Edge Productions will be teaming up once again for this one. Director Scott Jeffrey is slated to helm the film, and Rhys Frake-Waterfield will return once again, this time as a producer.

Scott Jeffrey said about the movie, “The film will be an incredibly dark retelling of the 1928 story we all know and love. Finding inspiration from the design used in Netflix’s The Ritual, Bambi will be a vicious killing machine that lurks in the wilderness. Prepare for Bambi on rabies!”

Along with this, Peter Pan is also next in line to get his own horror adaptation-treatment. Fans certainly have a lot to look forward to.

Would you watch this horror adaptation of “Bambi”?
