Disney Finally Puts an End to EPCOT’s Most Annoying Ride Meme and Silences Day Drinkers

For over two years, stepping into the preshow for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT meant bracing yourself for one almost guaranteed moment.

As guests stood in the Galaxarium briefing room, actor Terry Crews appeared on giant screens as Centurion Tal Marik of the Nova Corps. Welcoming visitors from Earth, he paused to ponder what the people of EPCOT call themselves: “Does anyone know what they call themselves? Epcoters? Epcotians? Citizens of EPCOT?”

For months, that brief, two-second pause was rarely met with quiet anticipation. Instead, groups of rowdy parkgoers—often fresh off a trip around World Showcase—would scream “ALCOHOLICS!” or “DAY DRINKERS!” at the top of their lungs.

What started as an organic joke quickly turned into a viral social media trend, a staple on TikTok, and an ongoing frustration for families and Cast Members. Now, Walt Disney Imagineering has officially stepped in to put a stop to the shouting once and for all.

Without making any public announcements, Disney quietly updated the Cosmic Rewind preshow video, completely removing the pause. Here is how Imagineering pulled off the fix, why Disney made the change, and how EPCOT’s booming drinking culture created the problem in the first place.

How Imagineering Silenced the Shouting

When Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind debuted in May 2022, Centurion Tal Marik’s hesitation was meant as a lighthearted beat to set the comedic tone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Originally, the pause allowed room for guests to occasionally shout harmless responses like “Humans!” or “Disney fans!”

However, as the “Alcoholics” response took over room after room, the joke rapidly wore out its welcome. Parents frequently voiced frustration online about having to explain what an “alcoholic” was to young children while waiting in line for a family roller coaster, while frequent riders complained that a loud minority was constantly hijacking the attraction's story.

To solve the problem without bringing Hollywood star Terry Crews back into a studio for an expensive reshoot, Imagineering editors turned to digital magic.

By making a precise edit to the video playback file, Disney trimmed the empty pause and seamlessly spliced the audio track. Centurion Tal Marik now moves instantly from asking his question to listing his suggestions. The edit is so clean that first-time riders will never know a gap existed. Today, if a guest attempts to shout out “Alcoholics!”, Tal Marik’s voice immediately speaks over them, deflating the rowdy joke before it can take off.

The Rise of ‘Drinking Around the World'

To understand why the “Alcoholics” shout-out became so prevalent, one has to look at the massive shift in EPCOT’s culture over the past two decades.

When EPCOT Center opened in 1982, it was designed primarily as an educational showcase centered on science, technology, and global culture. While beer and wine were available in World Showcase restaurants to complement international cuisine, alcohol was a background feature rather than the main attraction.

Fast forward to today, and EPCOT has transformed into Walt Disney World’s premier destination for adult nightlife and culinary tourism. The expansion of year-round events—such as the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival and the Flower & Garden Festival—means the park offers specialized beverage kiosks nearly 365 days a year.

This transformation gave rise to the famous fan tradition known as “Drinking Around the World.” The unofficial challenge encourages adult guests to sample an alcoholic beverage in each of the 11 World Showcase pavilions—starting in Mexico and ending in Canada.

What began as an informal Passholder activity has exploded into a full-blown cultural phenomenon:

  • Custom Merchandise: Online storefronts sell matching group t-shirts, drink “passports,” and lanyards designed specifically for EPCOT pub crawls.
  • Social Media Communities: Groups like the “Disney Day Drinkers Club” boast tens of thousands of members who share drink reviews and organize park meetups.
  • High-Profit Lounges: Disney has actively leaned into the trend, expanding popular spots like La Cava del Tequila in Mexico and the Rose & Crown Pub in the UK.

While day-drinking drives massive revenue for Disney, it has also created operational challenges. Combining Florida heat with long lines and heavy drinking often leads to loud, rowdy behavior. The preshow shouting at Cosmic Rewind was a direct symptom of World Showcase’s party culture spilling over into World Discovery’s family attractions.

A Win for Families and Imagineering

For parents and frequent parkgoers, Disney’s silent preshow edit is being hailed as a major win. By making a simple, software-based tweak to the video file, Imagineering eliminated a constant point of friction without altering the coaster's core storyline or requiring physical queue modifications.

With the pause removed, the rest of Cosmic Rewind remains entirely untouched—delivering the same thrilling teleportation effects, character banter, and randomized multi-song soundtrack that fans love. Disney's subtle edit sends a clear message: adult guests are welcome to enjoy World Showcase's food and drinks, but saving the galaxy will remain a fun, family-friendly experience for everyone.
