Disney Expected the Hate Before Marvel’s Latest Series Even Aired

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always thrived on firsts — the first Avenger, the first billion-dollar crossover, the first Black-led superhero film to receive a Best Picture nomination. But not every breakthrough lands with fanfare.

This time, the backlash came before the show even aired.

As Marvel Studios continues to expand its universe with younger and more diverse heroes, the reaction hasn’t always been celebratory. The Marvels (2023) struggled to break even after weathering a torrent of sexist and racist commentary online. Similar responses met Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Echo, each targeted by internet users accusing the studio of pushing cultural “agendas” or lowering standards.

So when Ironheart premiered, Disney reportedly knew what to expect.

Dominique Thorne’s Lead Role Sparks Online Backlash

Before the first episode of Ironheart was even available to stream, a barrage of negative reviews had already flooded Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Much of it focused not on storytelling or pacing but on lead actress Dominique Thorne, who reprises her role from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Riri Williams — a genius MIT dropout who builds her own Iron Man-inspired suit and returns to Chicago to chart a new path.

The series pits Riri’s high-tech intellect against Parker Robbins, aka The Hood — a low-level criminal who acquires mystical powers, injecting a supernatural twist into a narrative rooted in science and community.

The show’s themes — legacy, innovation, and identity — might have been central to Marvel’s broader ambitions, but online discourse fixated elsewhere. From social media threads to user review platforms, Ironheart became a target long before its story had a chance to speak for itself.

Coogler Responds: “We Knew It Was Coming”

Speaking on The New Blerd Order podcast, producer Ryan Coogler – who recently directed the box office hit Sinners (2025) – addressed the wave of backlash, confirming that both he and Ironheart’s creator Chinaka Hodge anticipated the response.

“Did you and [series creator and head writer Chinaka Hodge] go into this process knowing that this was coming, and if so, did that weigh on you going in?” host Anthony Whyte asked. “Did you warn her? Does Disney have any internal preparation for this stuff?”

Coogler didn’t hesitate: “The answer is yes to all of that.”

“Whenever you’re breaking ground in spaces that are thought of as not being for you, this happens,” he continued. “The entertainment business is not unique in that. That’s in every business.”

He also spoke directly to the show’s critics. “This show is for people who’re not permanently online, expressing their opinions about everything. This show is for people who are busy living their lives, bro,” he said.

Still, he stopped short of trying to convert online skeptics. “If they come to this show with an open mind, I think there’s going to be a lot there for them. For folks that come to the show with a closed mind… That ain’t got nothing to do with us.”

Streaming Numbers Tell a Different Story

Despite the online hostility, Ironheart has seen notable success on Disney+. Following the debut of its first three episodes, the show quickly climbed to the platform’s number one spot — and remains there.

While Marvel’s recent projects have seen mixed box office returns — Thunderbolts* brought in only $382 million despite solid reviewsIronheart demonstrates how streaming series can still thrive amid turbulent online discourse.

As the MCU enters its next chapter, it’s clear that audience expectations are changing. So are the voices leading the stories — and not everyone’s ready for it. But if Ironheart’s early numbers are any indication, plenty of viewers are.

  1. I seriously want to be enlightened. I want ALL Disney’s Marvel stories to excel. I eagerly tuned in to watch “Ironheart.” I love the background story. The special effects were flawless. I love the Wakanda movies too. I love Randall Park, Don Cheadle, Anthony Mackie, Michael P. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Teyonah Parris, Akira Akbar, Iman Vellani, Danai’ Gurira, Jupiter Nyong’o, Zoey Saldana, Tom Klimentieff, Chadwick Boseman (RIP), Winston Duke, Forest Whitaker, Diamond Hounsou, Mike Colter, Rosario Dawson, Monies Hall, Leslie Uggams, Carl Weather, Giancarlo Esposito, and etc., etc., and etc. And oddly, as much as I find Domique Thorne, as mostly unbelievable as Riri/Ironheart (the “MIT Geniius Dropout”, I will continue to watch each episode, hoping that she improves (like “Iron Fist” did. Lyric Ross, as Nat, is, for me, the shining bright star of this series.
