Disney Guests Stranded on Skyliner During Hurricane: A Nightmare Above the Park

As Hurricane Milton approached Orlando, a distressing situation unfolded at Walt Disney World Resort when the Disney Skyliner transportation system encountered significant operational difficulties. Guests, who were looking forward to their magical experiences, found themselves stranded in gondolas high above the park as the Skyliner began operating intermittently. The system, designed for efficiency, started to halt every 20 feet, leaving families anxiously awaiting resolution while storm warnings intensified.

The urgency to rectify the mechanical issues was palpable, especially with the winds of Hurricane Milton anticipated to pose a serious threat. As the storm escalated from a tropical depression to a category 5 hurricane, the situation for stranded Disney guests grew increasingly dire. They could only hope for timely assistance and safe transport back to their accommodations as the storm's effects began to be felt across the region.

Disney Skyliner Features

The Disney Skyliner, which debuted in 2019, is a state-of-the-art gondola system engineered to provide swift and efficient transportation between several key locations within the sprawling Walt Disney World Resort. This innovative mode of transport connects Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and Disney’s Riviera Resort to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Skyliner has rapidly gained popularity among guests, not just for its functional capabilities but also for the scenic views it offers. Riders are treated to unparalleled vistas of Disney property, enhancing their overall experience.

However, like many outdoor attractions, the gondola system is susceptible to mechanical and weather-related disruptions. Return rides and smooth operations can be compromised during severe weather, prompting the system to shut down for safety reasons.

Safety Protocols and Concerns

With the approach of Hurricane Milton, safety concerns regarding the Skyliner resurfaced. The gondolas, suspended high in the air, are especially vulnerable to strong winds and inclement conditions.

According to reports, guests experienced unexpected anxiety as they remained suspended, with intermittent movement of the gondolas only further heightening their concerns. Some guests expressed their fears on social media, noting the unpredictability of the situation. One witness shared:

Transportation
For some reason, the Skyliner is operational and people (including family) are stuck on it. They’re staying at the Caribbean and it was the only transportation back. They’re telling me it moves about 20 feet and stops.

Hopefully they get it moving soon and all the people down safely.
