Disney Just Changed How You Ride Pirates of the Caribbean

One of Disneyland Park’s most iconic attractions has undergone some big changes.

Three animatronic pirates, reminiscent of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, peer out from a stone jail cell. One dangles a key tied to a rope to entice a dog holding keys in its mouth. The dimly lit scene glows under an old lantern's light, capturing a moment of playful mischief.

Originally known as Genie+, Lightning Lane is reminiscent of the previous FastPass system, which was designed for convenience and efficiency. With the overwhelming number of guests seeking to maximize their time at the park, Lightning Lane emerged as a necessity to some, albeit with its own set of challenges.

One notable aspect of the Lightning Lane service is its fluctuating prices. The cost is not fixed and can vary significantly based on the time of year and current demand. This can make planning for a day at Disneyland more complicated, as guests must decide whether investing in Lightning Lane for specific attractions aligns with their budget and experience expectations.

Because of the pricing structure and potential confusion surrounding it, some visitors prefer to stick to traditional standby queues, leading to mixed feelings about the service overall.

The beloved Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland has remained a staple since its debut. Over the years, it has captivated audiences with its immersive storytelling and detailed scenes.
However, in January 2024, to help manage crowd control amid other renovations, Pirates of the Caribbean was included in the Lightning Lane options. This transition was initially intended to be temporary while work was ongoing at adjacent attractions, including Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the Haunted Mansion.

As of June 30, 2025, Lightning Lane access for Pirates of the Caribbean was officially discontinued. This decision followed a period in which the service was actively utilized to alleviate long wait times during peak periods. The addition of the ride to the Lightning Lane was met with mixed reactions, and the subsequent removal certainly prompted discussions among park visitors and Disney enthusiasts alike.

Disneyland’s Current Lightning Lane Attractions

With the removal of Pirates of the Caribbean from the Lightning Lane offerings, Disneyland continues to provide access to a variety of other attractions. Current Lightning Lane attractions include popular rides such as Autopia, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Haunted Mansion, and the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. The complete list reflects a mix of classic rides and newer experiences that appeal to a range of guests.

The structure of Lightning Lane at Disneyland differs from that at Walt Disney World, where guests have access to a slightly different selection of attractions. These differences can significantly impact the overall experiences of guests at each park. In the absence of Pirates of the Caribbean, Disneyland’s offering may cater better to patrons seeking to enjoy other attractions during their visit, promoting a more balanced distribution of foot traffic across the park.

For many, this change has sparked a renewed appreciation for the standby line experience. The chance to engage with fellow park-goers while waiting, the excitement of approaching the ride without a time restriction, and the spontaneity it offers can be invigorating. As guests continue to navigate the evolving landscape of Disneyland, community sentiment remains a blend of nostalgia and optimism for what the future may hold.
