Disney Just Committed to Helping Kids in Another Country, and the Details Are Moving

Most guests who sail on Disney Cruise Line through the Bahamas experience the islands as a backdrop. The turquoise water from the deck of a ship, the private beach at Castaway Cay, the newer experiences at Lookout Cay on Eleuthera, and then the ship moves on to the next port. What happens in the communities behind those shorelines is largely invisible from the guest perspective, and that is exactly what makes the initiative Disney Cruise Line is expanding across the Bahamas worth paying attention to.

The Play Project launched in 2024 alongside the opening of Lookout Cay. They have been building something real for Bahamian kids since. The expansion announced for 2026 takes it considerably further, and the partnerships being brought in to support it signal that Disney is treating this as a long-term commitment rather than a one-time gesture.

What Has Already Been Built

The Play Project spent its first year focused on South and Central Eleuthera, working with local communities to revitalize play spaces. P.A. Gibson, Deep Creek, Tarpum Bay, Rock Sound, Wemyss Bight, and Green Castle all received improved facilities with more than 230 Disney VoluntEARS working alongside Bahamian officials, teachers, and students during the build phases. The initiative has generated more than 32,000 hours of annual play for local children across those six schools, a figure that reflects ongoing impact rather than a single construction event.

What Is Being Expanded

The 2026 expansion brings The Play Project to Eleuthera, Nassau, and Abaco, with refurbished baseball fields, basketball courts, and track-and-field facilities across all three areas. This year, Disney Cruise Line has already resurfaced baseball fields at Tarpum Bay and installed new playgrounds at Emily G. Petty and Emma E. Cooper schools in Eleuthera. Community build days in Abaco and Nassau are coming this summer, with the full expansion targeted for completion by August 2026.

The geographic choices are not random. Eleuthera is home to Lookout Cay. Nassau is where all Disney Cruise Line ships are registered and a frequent port of call. The Abaco islands sit adjacent to Castaway Cay, with some port adventures already traveling to South Abaco. The initiative is being built in the communities most directly connected to Disney's operational footprint in the Bahamas.

ESPN and Buddy Hield Are Now Involved

The expansion brings two significant new partners into The Play Project. ESPN's Take Back Sports initiative joins the effort. The focus is on reversing declining youth sports participation by eliminating financial barriers. While also providing free programming for kids who would otherwise be priced out of organized athletics. The partnership connects the physical facility improvements being built on the ground to broader programmatic resources designed to support the young athletes who will use them.

Disney Cruise Line is collaborating with the Buddy Hield Foundation in Nassau to enhance sports facilities at Woodcock Primary School. This initiative will culminate in a basketball tournament hosted by Buddy Hield, a Bahamian NBA star. As one of the most prominent athletes from the Bahamas, Hield's involvement adds local authenticity and cultural significance that goes beyond mere facility upgrades. For the students at Woodcock Primary, this is more than just a corporate initiative. It represents a basketball court and a tournament hosted by someone who grew up in their country and achieved success at the highest level of professional basketball.

What This Actually Means

Disney Cruise Line sailings to Bahamian ports generate significant economic activity for the company and the islands that host its ships. The Play Project represents a portion of that relationship directed toward the children in those communities. This is a form that will endure long after any individual sailing season ends. The first year demonstrated real results. The 2026 expansion into three island groups with ESPN and the Buddy Hield Foundation involved demonstrates that the program is growing rather than plateauing.

By August 2026, students across Eleuthera, Nassau, and Abaco will have access to upgraded sports facilities. Which did not exist before Disney Cruise Line decided to build them. Most guests sailing past these islands this summer will never see any of it. That does not make it any less real or any less worth knowing about.
