Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom is set to reopen after being closed since last summer, with the official Walt Disney World website confirming significant updates. Enhancements include handheld blasters, reactive targets that light up when hit, new ride vehicles with real-time scoring monitors, and a new character, Buddy, who greets guests at the start. This marks a transition from construction to marketing as the attraction prepares for its reopening.
What the Disney Website Actually Says
The new description on the Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin webpage reads:
“Incoming Transmission – Enhancements Acquired. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin is almost back and will be power-packed with more fun at Magic Kingdom park! Star Command's top minds have added a series of enhancements, including handheld blasters for more freedom of movement, additional interactive targets, scores that go lightyears beyond what you can imagine, and Buddy—our newest crew member! Don't miss your chance to team up with Buzz and save the galaxy on a supercharged adventure with fun that goes to infinity and beyond.”
Disney also changed some wording from “Junior Space Ranger” to “Rookie Space Ranger,” which probably doesn't mean anything significant, but we'll find out when the attraction actually reopens, and people can experience the full updated version.
The Actual Changes Coming to Disney
Buddy the support-bot is a new character at the start of the ride, providing encouragement, running system checks, and allowing guests to practice their aim before the mission. This is especially beneficial for first-time riders and kids.
The ride features reactive targets that light up when hit, addressing past complaints about not knowing if shots landed. This instant feedback enhances the competitiveness of the experience.
The redesigned Star Cruiser ride vehicles now feature Buzz Lightyear and Star Command colors, along with video monitors displaying real-time scores, eliminating the frustration of waiting until the end to see how you did.
Handheld blasters replace the old fixed versions, allowing for better accuracy with always-on lasers. Each vehicle has two laser colors to track shots, and the new blasters include enhanced lighting, sound, and vibration effects for a more satisfying experience.
The Entrance Is Getting Ripped Apart
People riding the Tomorrowland PeopleMover recently spotted that the pavement around the Buzz Lightyear entrance has been completely torn up with large sections removed to make room for a brand-new attraction sign Disney is planning to install. That exterior work matters because Disney doesn't usually mess with pavement and signage unless they're in the final stages of a refurbishment.
Exterior updates happen near the end of projects, not the beginning, which means opening is probably weeks away instead of months.
When It's Actually Opening at Disney
Disney still hasn't announced an exact reopening date beyond saying “spring” which could mean March, April, or May. But the website update combined with the entrance pavement being torn up suggests it's approaching fast. The attraction has been closed since last summer, which is almost a full year of refurbishment for what's essentially a dark ride that didn't require completely rebuilding the building or track system.
When Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin finally reopens this spring, it's going to be a comprehensively reimagined version that addresses pretty much every complaint people have had about the attraction for years. The handheld blasters, reactive targets, and real-time scoring solve the three biggest problems with the old version. Whether that's enough to make it feel like a brand-new attraction or just a really good update remains to be seen, but at least it's finally almost back.
