Disney Speeds Up Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Retheme With Early Construction Work

Disney isn’t waiting around to get the Muppets on track—literally. Over at Hollywood Studios, the company has already taken a bold step forward in reimagining one of its most iconic thrill rides. The first major sign of progress? Aerosmith’s departure.

This isn’t just a rumor anymore. The preshow that featured the rock band has officially been removed, and that small change marks the start of something much bigger.

Bye-Bye, Backstage Pass

Guests who enter the queue for Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster today won’t find the famous preshow where Steven Tyler and his band tried to hook you up with backstage passes and a super-stretch limo. The scene has been completely pulled from the experience—leaving a bit of an empty spot, but also clearing the way for what’s coming next.

Rather than wait for a full closure, Disney is taking the opportunity to begin construction in phases. The ride remains open (for now), but crews are working behind the scenes to reshape the preshow area into something brand new.

Muppets Mayhem Is Almost Here

In 2026, Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster will reopen with a brand-new identity: Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. The new storyline swaps rock legends for puppet chaos, sending guests on a musical hunt for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem after the band mysteriously vanishes before their biggest concert yet.

Characters like Scooter and Kermit will lead the charge, while the preshow space will likely include appearances from familiar faces and even the lovable penguin animatronics that were once part of MuppetVision 3D.

This transformation also comes on the heels of other Muppet-related changes at Disney World, including the permanent closure of MuppetVision 3D and the upcoming debut of a Monsters, Inc.-themed land in its place.

A Strategic Start

Rather than shut everything down all at once, Disney is clearly opting for a more efficient route. By working on the preshow first, they’re minimizing downtime and maximizing progress. It’s a smart strategy—especially if they want to meet or beat their projected summer 2026 deadline.

And that raises a big question: will this head start let Disney open the Muppet coaster earlier than expected?

It’s too early to tell, but fans are already hoping.

Why This Retheme Matters

This isn’t just a new paint job. It’s a full-on story and experience shift that breathes life into a franchise many feared was fading from the parks. The Muppets are getting a marquee spot, and the energy of Electric Mayhem is a perfect match for a high-speed launch coaster.

It’s also a win for Disney, which continues to modernize attractions by blending classic ride systems with fresh, character-driven narratives.

The Countdown Has Officially Begun

With Aerosmith officially out and work already underway, there’s no turning back now. The Muppets are taking over—and Disney’s moving fast to make sure the retheme rocks from start to finish.

Summer 2026 might still be the target, but this early action has fans wondering: is the big premiere closer than we think?

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
