Transportation has always been one of the biggest conveniences of staying at Walt Disney World. Guests can leave their cars parked for days while traveling between hotels, theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs using buses, boats, monorails, and the Disney Skyliner.
Recently, however, several changes have been announced that are reshaping parts of that network. Rather than focusing on a single update, here's a roundup of the transportation changes currently affecting guests across Walt Disney World.
The first involves the Disney Skyliner.
Disney has confirmed the gondola transportation system will close for its annual refurbishment from January 24 through January 30, 2027. During the closure, bus transportation will replace Skyliner service between EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and the resorts that normally rely on the aerial system.
For guests planning late January vacations, it's something worth keeping in mind when choosing where to stay.
The second major change is already in place at Disney Springs.
Disney now limits access to resort-bound buses leaving Disney Springs. Guests must demonstrate they have a valid reason to travel to a resort, such as staying there overnight or holding a dining reservation. The updated policy has changed how many visitors approach resort hopping and has reduced the number of guests using Disney Springs as an unofficial transportation center.
Boat transportation has followed a similar path.
Certain water taxi routes departing Disney Springs now require the same eligibility verification before guests can board. At the same time, boat service between Disney Springs and Disney's Old Key West Resort is temporarily unavailable because of maintenance work, with buses filling in until service returns.
These changes don't represent a reduction in Disney transportation overall. Instead, they appear to reflect a broader effort to improve operations while directing transportation toward guests who need it most.
That naturally raises another question.
Could additional transportation changes be coming?
Disney hasn't announced any new restrictions beyond those already in place. Guests can still travel between theme parks and resorts using the existing transportation network without additional checkpoints.
Still, the recent policy changes show Disney isn't afraid to rethink how transportation works if it improves efficiency or helps manage crowds.
For most visitors, getting around Walt Disney World remains easier than at almost any other vacation destination. But with maintenance schedules, updated boarding policies, and temporary route closures becoming more common, it's increasingly important to check transportation updates before arriving.
