A New WDW Guest Experience

Picture this: you’re on your way to the most magical place on Earth, but instead of the usual crowded highways, you’re traveling on a sleek, efficient rail system straight to Walt Disney World Resort. While it might sound like a distant dream, a major transit expansion in Central Florida could soon make that a reality. But what does this proposed change mean for your future trips to Disney World?

A Rail Corridor for the Future of Disney World: What’s on the Table?

In the heart of Central Florida, a major decision is brewing that could forever alter the way guests get to the world-renowned theme parks. According to the Orlando Business Journal, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD), which governs the land of Walt Disney World Resort, is considering an unprecedented move: backing a $500,000 contribution to a transit study that could bring a shared rail corridor to the region. But is this just about easing travel, or could it signal a new era for Central Florida’s tourism landscape? Keep reading as we break down why this matters—and how it could reshape your Disney vacation.

The proposed plan would focus on the development of a shared rail corridor, connecting the commuter rail service SunRail with the Brightline intercity rail network. A $6 million study would evaluate the potential for this corridor to include stops at some of the region’s most important transportation hubs, such as the Orlando International Airport and the Orange County Convention Center.

In addition to these key locations, the expansion would offer easy access to South International Drive, positioning it as a potential game-changer for both locals and tourists traveling to the Walt Disney World Resort. But here's where it gets interesting: Brightline, which already operates a service linking Orlando to Miami, could expand this route even further to Tampa, connecting an even wider array of destinations across Florida.

Why This Matters to WDW Fans

This expansion wouldn’t just be a boost for commuters— it could directly impact the hundreds of thousands of tourists heading to Disney World each year. Imagine hopping on a train directly from the Orlando International Airport or other major locations, all the way to Disney Springs or even the heart of the Magic Kingdom. Not only would this provide much-needed relief to Orlando’s notoriously congested highways, but it would also make navigating Central Florida’s sprawling landscape far more efficient.

You may be wondering: how does all of this affect your next Disney vacation? Well, this rail expansion could make it easier and faster to get to Walt Disney World Resort, without the hassle of rental cars, tolls, or traffic. For years, Disney guests have been left with limited options to travel to and from the resort—usually relying on buses, taxis, or rideshare services. This new rail system could revolutionize the guest experience, offering an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and fast alternative for visitors who want to skip the stress of driving.

But that’s not all. This proposal has the potential to bring a SunRail station to Disney Springs, something that was initially proposed by Brightline in 2019 before being scrapped in 2022. While Disney has always shown interest in a Disney Springs rail station, this new proposal could pave the way for such a project to finally come to life. With stops at major transportation centers like the Orlando International Airport, it’s easy to see how this would increase accessibility to the resort, making travel more seamless for both tourists and employees alike.

The Bigger Picture: Growth, Convenience, and Sustainability

This would also benefit the surrounding community, as the agreement would require Walt Disney World to create a local business hiring program, ensuring that the development and construction of such a transit system would include local businesses and provide jobs to those in the region. It’s a win-win, boosting both tourism and the local economy.

The proposed rail system isn't just a matter of convenience. It’s part of a larger plan for Central Florida’s growth. Last year, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and Walt Disney World reached a historic agreement, pledging to invest $17 billion in the development of Disney properties in the district over the next 10 to 20 years. This massive investment will bring with it numerous improvements to the region, including $10 million for attainable housing projects, creating more opportunities for locals, and a host of new developments that will enhance the guest experience.

As part of this deal, Disney has already expressed openness to the idea of a SunRail station at Disney Springs, which could significantly ease the process of getting to and from the resort. If this expansion moves forward, it could lead to a smoother, more pleasant experience for visitors, without the burden of gridlocked roads or crowded buses.

The Bottom Line: Could This Make Your Disney World Vacation Even Better?

But the bigger impact is this: Central Florida is rapidly becoming a focal point for tourism and development, with a commitment to sustainable growth. With investment from the Florida Department of Transportation, Universal Destinations & Experiences, and local government bodies, this project is poised to make a lasting impression on both the transportation infrastructure and the tourism landscape of Central Florida.

Representatives from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District were not immediately available for comment, but the board of supervisors is set to vote on the approval of this $500,000 support payment on March 28. If passed, this study will be a crucial first step toward determining the feasibility of this ambitious expansion. While it’s still early in the process, the potential benefits for both Disney World guests and the community are undeniable.

In the meantime, the tourism industry—and Disney fans alike—are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the vote. If the expansion moves forward, it could forever change how visitors experience the magic of Disney World, making it even easier and more convenient to travel to the resort.

So, what do you think? Could a SunRail station at Disney Springs and the addition of Brightline stops improve your Disney vacation experience?

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
