Disney World Guests Discover Nasty News About Eating Establishment

For many Disney World visitors, the excitement of a park day doesn’t stop at the gates—it extends to every meal, snack, and late-night bite. After hours of rides and entertainment, guests often venture beyond Disney property to explore the bustling dining options on Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, known locally as Highway 192. Families pile into booths, cast members grab quick meals after work, and tourists find comfort in American-style chains and hidden gems alike.

But here’s something most guests never consider: the safety standards of those restaurants. According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), more than 10,000 inspections are conducted each year across Central Florida. While most pass without much fuss, some reveal jaw-dropping violations that remind us why inspections exist in the first place.

And last week, one of those inspections turned up results that will make Disney vacationers think twice before grabbing a casual burger and fries just outside the resort.

What Happened at Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews

On September 15, 2025, inspectors visited Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews, located at 7640 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway near Disney World. What they found led to an immediate temporary closure of the restaurant.

The report cited 15 violations—with four labeled high-priority. These included:

  • An employee failing to wash their hands before handling food

  • Rodent activity in the kitchen area

  • Improper storage of a toxic substance

  • Temperature issues involving food safety

Other infractions included sticky fly tape hanging above food prep areas, standing water in a cooler, and black grease buildup in equipment.

After corrective actions—such as retraining staff on handwashing, removing droppings, and adjusting food storage—the restaurant was reinspected later the same day. That follow-up still showed 11 violations (three high-priority) but the DBPR ultimately cleared Sickies to reopen.

How Disney Guests Should Approach Dining Nearby

For travelers, especially families juggling itineraries and budgets, off-property restaurants are an attractive option. Meals along Highway 192 are often cheaper than Disney’s in-park dining, and chains offer familiar menus.

But this closure underscores why guests should research restaurants before visiting. Here are some quick tips:

  • Check inspection records: DBPR posts all inspection results online. A quick search can reveal a restaurant’s recent history.

  • Look for red flags: Signs like sticky floors, food left sitting out, or unusual smells may indicate deeper issues.

  • Trust busy spots: Locations filled with locals often maintain stronger standards.

  • Use review apps: Guest photos and recent reviews on Google and Yelp can provide immediate insight into cleanliness.

Hidden Hacks for Safer (and Smarter) Dining

Frequent Orlando visitors have a few tricks when choosing dining spots near Disney:

  • Explore Celebration or Winter Garden: Just minutes away, these towns boast family-friendly restaurants with stronger reputations.

  • Ask cast members: Disney employees often know which nearby places are safest and most reliable.

  • Opt for takeout: If you’re unsure about cleanliness, take your food to-go—this lets you inspect it yourself before eating.

  • Bring groceries: Many guests stock up at Target or Publix and prep simple meals in hotel rooms or Airbnbs, avoiding the risk altogether.

Why This Matters to Disney World Fans

Dining is part of the Disney vacation experience, and for many families, memories are made as much over burgers and fries as on rides. News of a shutdown—even temporary—serves as a wake-up call about food safety in high-tourist areas.

Guest reactions online highlighted frustration but also relief that inspectors caught issues before anyone got sick. Posts across travel forums noted the “gross” details of the report, while others reminded vacationers that these inspections are designed to protect public health.

For Disney fans, the takeaway is clear: enjoying your vacation doesn’t mean letting your guard down. Knowing where you eat matters just as much as choosing which rides to rope-drop in the morning.

While Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews has since reopened after corrective action, the violations are a reminder for guests to remain cautious when dining off-property. With a little research and awareness, you can ensure that every meal on your Disney vacation is as magical—and safe—as the memories you’re making.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
