For years, Walt Disney World has reigned as the undisputed theme park champion of Central Florida. But now, with Universal Orlando Resort’s highly anticipated Epic Universe set to open in 2025, a new era of competition is upon us.
With cutting-edge lands, never-before-seen attractions, and an immersive experience that could redefine the theme park industry, Universal is making its boldest move yet.

Disney World Comeback? A Wave of Changes—And Now, a Fan-Favorite Returns
Disney, however, isn’t sitting back and watching the competition steal the spotlight. A series of surprising announcements in recent weeks suggest that Disney is gearing up for battle. Could these strategic moves be a sign that the House of Mouse is preparing to fend off the biggest challenge to its dominance in decades?
In the past few days alone, Disney has made a flurry of guest experience enhancements that have left fans buzzing. Just this week, the company brought back its beloved Airport Luggage Transfer program, making it easier than ever for Value Resort guests flying Southwest Airlines to navigate Orlando International Airport stress-free.
Disney also revealed a historic operational change—for the first time in decades, all six Walt Disney World parks will open at the same time, including both water parks. And just last week, a wave of discounts and special offers was rolled out for families visiting in the summer and early fall, a move that many speculate is Disney’s attempt to keep guests on its property rather than venturing over to Universal’s new park.

An Unforgettable Underwater Adventure Returns
But the latest announcement might be the most unexpected yet: DiveQuest, the scuba diving experience at EPCOT, is officially returning after more than six months of closure.

Set within the breathtaking 5.7-million-gallon saltwater tank at The Seas pavilion in EPCOT, DiveQuest offers certified divers the chance to swim alongside over 2,000 marine animals in a one-of-a-kind experience.
After suddenly disappearing from the lineup on October 19, 2024, the experience had remained unavailable for months, with no return date in sight. Now, Disney has confirmed that DiveQuest will make its grand comeback starting May 1, 2025—and reservations are officially open.
The schedule currently allows bookings throughout May, excluding Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The furthest available date at this time is June 2, 2025, with additional dates expected to be added soon.

What Makes DiveQuest Special?
For many Disney guests, DiveQuest has been a bucket-list experience that sets EPCOT apart from any other theme park in the world. The two-hour adventure includes:
- 40 minutes of actual diving time in a massive saltwater tank filled with sharks, rays, sea turtles, and vibrant fish.
- A behind-the-scenes tour of The Seas pavilion, offering a rare look at the inner workings of one of Disney’s most advanced aquatic environments.
- Exclusive access for guests 10 and older who hold an Open Water SCUBA certification (guests under 16 must be accompanied by an adult).
- All diving equipment provided, ensuring a hassle-free experience—though divers are welcome to bring their own masks.

The Bigger Picture: Why Is Disney Making These Moves Now?
While the return of DiveQuest is exciting on its own, it’s hard to ignore the broader context. Why is Disney suddenly ramping up guest experiences and perks at this moment?
With Universal’s Epic Universe set to debut in 2025, industry analysts speculate that Disney is feeling the heat. Universal’s new park will introduce a level of competition that Disney hasn’t faced in decades. With fresh, cutting-edge attractions, immersive lands based on Nintendo, How to Train Your Dragon, and more, Universal is poised to pull a significant share of tourists away from Disney.
By reinstating popular programs like luggage transfer, rolling out deep discounts, extending park hours, and reviving exclusive experiences like DiveQuest, Disney seems to be shoring up its defenses to keep guests engaged and spending more time on its property.

What This Means for Disney World and Universal Theme Park Fans
If there’s one takeaway from all of this, it’s that competition is great for theme park lovers. With Universal making power plays and Disney responding in kind, guests can expect even more perks, promotions, and thrilling new experiences as both companies battle for dominance.
While it’s unclear just how much Universal’s Epic Universe will shake up the theme park industry, one thing is certain: Disney isn’t going down without a fight.

The DiveQuest experience is nothing but amazing. Besides all of the wonderful sea life, you get to interact with the guests (if you want) that are eating at the restaurant and looking through the Nemo exhibit. I highly recommend it.
