Disney World Guests Wave Goodbye to Theme Park as Closure Imminent

A seasonal goodbye is on the horizon at Walt Disney World Resort, and it’s one that water park fans should have on their radar.

Disney has confirmed that Typhoon Lagoon will close for its annual refurbishment beginning in mid-February, just as Blizzard Beach wraps up its own off-season maintenance and reopens to guests. For several months this spring, Blizzard Beach will stand as the resort’s only operating water park.

This operational swap is part of Disney’s long-running rotation strategy. By alternating refurbishments, the resort keeps at least one water park available year-round. However, for visitors who enjoy the tropical vibe of Typhoon Lagoon or who prefer having multiple aquatic options, the late winter and early spring period will look a little different.

The timing is especially important for families planning spring break vacations. Historically, that stretch of the calendar brings heavier crowds, and with only one water park open, advance planning becomes even more critical. Checking operating schedules before booking dining reservations or park days could make a big difference.

Recent weeks have already shown how unpredictable Florida weather can be. Typhoon Lagoon experienced temporary closures due to colder conditions moving through Central Florida, underscoring how outdoor water attractions remain vulnerable during the winter months.

Looking ahead to summer, guests can expect a more familiar setup. Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed that Typhoon Lagoon will reopen on May 12, with Blizzard Beach remaining open as well. Once peak travel season begins, both water parks will operate at the same time, offering the complete lineup of slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers.

It’s worth noting that this full operational return only happened last year. Before that, all six Walt Disney World theme parks had not been open simultaneously since 2019. Disney Experiences chose to restore that full capacity just one day before Universal Epic Universe debuted at Universal Orlando Resort, a timing that did not go unnoticed by industry watchers.

Alongside the return of dual water park operations, Disney is also bringing back a limited-time hotel perk.

“Guests staying at a Disney Resorts Collection hotel between May 26 and September 8, 2026, can enjoy free admission to one of the Walt Disney World water parks on their check-in day,” Disney Parks Blog wrote at the start of the year.

With overall vacation costs continuing to climb, perks like complimentary water park admission may help soften the impact for guests already investing heavily in their trips.

For those visiting between mid-February and May, flexibility will be key. Whether that means adjusting expectations to focus on Blizzard Beach or reworking travel dates to coincide with Typhoon Lagoon’s return, understanding the refurbishment schedule is essential.
