Change is at the heart of Disney World’s history. From opening day to the present, attractions have evolved to keep the parks fresh and relevant. Yet not all updates land equally well. Some become instant classics, while others are remembered as missteps. Here is a ranking of Disney’s most significant ride rethemes, moving from the most successful to the least effective.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
EPCOT’s transformation found its crown jewel in Cosmic Rewind. This high-tech roller coaster blends humor, thrills, and music in a way that perfectly captures the Marvel franchise while fitting into EPCOT’s new vision.

2. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
Replacing Splash Mountain was a bold decision, but the end result strikes the right balance between preserving a classic ride structure and introducing a culturally significant story. The attraction’s detailed animatronics and soundtrack elevate it into the upper tier of Disney’s portfolio.
3. Frozen Ever After
While Maelstrom’s departure disappointed many longtime EPCOT fans, Frozen Ever After has succeeded as a family-friendly crowd magnet. Its technology and theming have made it one of the park’s most popular attractions.

4. Test Track (1999)
The shift from World of Motion to Test Track reflected EPCOT’s evolving identity. The 1999 version felt modern and dynamic, with the excitement of high-speed testing scenarios. Later versions have struggled to recapture that same spirit.
5. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
This retheme provided Fantasyland with a reliable family ride. It may not have the edge of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, but it has become a dependable staple for younger guests.

6. Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid
An attraction that delivers in aesthetics but falls short in storytelling depth. The retheme promised more than it ultimately offered, making it a mid-tier experience.
7. Gran Fiesta Tour
Adding Donald Duck and the Three Caballeros to EPCOT’s Mexico pavilion created a playful diversion but reduced the pavilion’s cultural focus. It remains fun but lacks the depth of its predecessor.

8. Journey Into Imagination with Figment
The most polarizing of all. The original was celebrated for its creativity and charm, while the current version is widely regarded as a downgrade. It remains the weakest link in EPCOT’s lineup and a cautionary tale about the risks of retheming.
