Disneyland Guest Says He Was Charged 20% Tip With No Warning, No Refund

A visitor to a popular frozen treat and snack food shop near Disneyland Resort discovered an unwelcome surprise on his receipt—a mandatory 20% gratuity added without his knowledge or consent. The incident sparked heated debate on social media about undisclosed service charges and whether businesses can legally add tips without customer approval.

On January 13, X (formerly known as Twitter) user Sam Carter (@Cartarsauce) shared his experience visiting Joe's Italian Ice, a frozen treat stand located one mile from Disneyland Resort. The shop, known for rotating selections of Italian ices and soft serve, typically draws crowds of Anaheim locals and tourists. Carter finally stopped by after trying to avoid the infamously long lines, only to discover an unauthorized charge on his credit card.

“Been wanting to try Joe's Italian Ice by Disneyland but it's always slammed. Tho I hear the line moves fast,” Carter wrote. “Ya it's pretty good but I don't care for them adding a tip without asking. Major sus, that ain't right. I don't mind tipping but come on.”

Carter posted a photo showing his frozen treat alongside the receipt. The dessert cost $7.79, but a $1.56 gratuity (exactly 20%) was automatically added, bringing his total to $9.35. He never authorized the tip or selected a gratuity amount before his credit card was charged.

“Broken” Tablet Prevents Tip Selection

Mandatory gratuity and service charges have become increasingly common at Table-Service restaurants nationwide following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, most states, including California, require businesses to clearly display any mandatory fees on menus or visible signage at the establishment.

Disney Parks fans responding to Carter's post asked whether Joe's Italian Ice disclosed the mandatory 20% tip anywhere. Carter confirmed that not only was there no warning, but employees also claimed that the customer-facing tablet, which normally allows tip selection, was “broken.” Meanwhile, the credit card chip reader attached to the supposedly malfunctioning tablet worked perfectly.

The super sus part was the iPad thing outside the window “wasn’t working”, just the cc chip thing. Shady.

The explanation raises questions about whether the tablet was genuinely broken or whether Joe's Italian Ice deliberately disables the tip selection screen to automatically charge 20% gratuities without customer knowledge.

Southern California Disney Community Reacts

Carter's post generated dozens of responses from Disney Parks fans, many agreeing that the undisclosed mandatory tip represented questionable business practices for a high-traffic food establishment near Disneyland Resort.

“I have seen Joe's but for them to add a tip I would never go back!” said @CLS1954.

“That doesn't even sound legal adding a tip like that,” @doiknats wrote.

Some commenters defended Joe's Italian Ice, despite the controversy over the mandatory gratuity.

“The line is never too long. it does go quick. joes is the best, even with the tip,” @FrshBakedDisney replied.
