Disneyland Resort's 66-year-old Monorail system shut down on Monday, March 30, temporarily ceasing operation of Walt Disney's pioneering transportation system that connects the Downtown Disney District to Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park.
The closure was originally announced in February. Disneyland Resort still hasn't provided a reopening date, leaving families without the 2.5-mile tram route and no access to the Tomorrowland entrance to the original Southern California Disney park.
A 1959 Vision for the Future

Walt Disney debuted the Disneyland Monorail in June 1959, channeling his lifelong train obsession into what he envisioned as the future of public transportation in the United States. While that broader vision never materialized, the Monorail became a signature of the Disney parks, replicated at Walt Disney World Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort.
Of course, the original tram system has received periodic updates, notably for the debut of Disney California Adventure Park in 2001. The tram currently runs a 13-minute, 2.5-mile journey between the Downtown Disney District and Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park.
Infrastructure Work Planned

Construction permits filed before the February refurbishment announcement reveal plans for electrical system updates and support pillar reinforcement. The 66-year-old system may appear unchanged to guests when it reopens, despite the internal improvements.
Disneyland Resort hasn't confirmed specific work plans or provided a reopening timeline. The Tomorrowland entrance to Disneyland Park likely closed alongside the Monorail, since the tram provides exclusive access to that entry point into the original Southern California theme park.
Indefinite Closure

Disneyland Resort's website advises guests to “check back” for refurbishment updates.
The shutdown eliminates a primary transportation option for Disney Resort hotel guests and Downtown Disney District visitors headed to Disneyland Park. Families now must walk to Disneyland Park's main entrance or enter through Disney California Adventure Park with Park Hopper tickets.
