On May 16, 2025, Disneyland Resort in sunny Anaheim, California, will kick off a momentous occasion: its 70th anniversary celebration. But before the party starts, one of the park’s most iconic attractions—the beloved Disneyland Railroad—will temporarily close its gates to guests once more.

July 17, 1955, marked the day Walt Disney unveiled his grand vision, forever changing entertainment with Disneyland, affectionately known as “The Happiest Place on Earth.” Since then, Disney theme parks have become global cultural icons, with locations in Florida, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. Of course, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando stands as the crown jewel of Disney’s theme park empire, drawing more visitors than any other resort worldwide.
Still, there’s something truly magical about Disneyland Resort. While smaller in size than its East Coast counterpart, it’s steeped in nostalgia, history, and the mark of Walt Disney himself. Knowing that Walt once strolled down Main Street, U.S.A., adds a unique sense of wonder that only Disneyland can deliver. And you can bet that Disney is planning something unforgettable for its upcoming milestone celebration.

The 70th anniversary festivities will introduce dazzling new entertainment, including Wondrous Journeys, which transforms Sleeping Beauty Castle, Main Street, U.S.A., the Rivers of America, and “it’s a small world” with breathtaking projections. Disney describes it as “a stunning journey through over 100 years of Walt Disney Animation Studios storytelling.”
Also making their grand return are the fan-favorite Paint the Night parade at Disneyland Park and Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration! at Disney California Adventure Park. Debuting alongside these beloved favorites will be World of Color – Happiness! at Disney California Adventure, all part of the 70th’s cheerful theme, “Celebrate Happy!”
Perhaps the most exciting addition is the debut of a Walt Disney audio-animatronic in Walt Disney–A Magical Life, which is sure to tug at the heartstrings of Disney fans everywhere.

But before the celebration officially begins, Disneyland has confirmed that one of its opening-day treasures will temporarily close. According to Scott Gustin (@scottgustin), the Disneyland Railroad will go offline starting January 13, with plans to reopen just in time for the anniversary festivities.
“NEW: The Disneyland Railroad will be closed beginning [January 13] as crews continue work to replace sections of the track,” Gustin shared. “Disneyland says train operations will resume in the spring and in time for the start of Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration on May 16.”

The Railroad only recently reopened on October 25, 2024, after months of refurbishment that included track replacement and adjustments to the New Orleans Square station amid construction on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Gustin addressed the closure’s timing, explaining, “The fall closure replaced sections of the track. This closure will allow crews to complete the work before Disneyland's 70th.”
A quintessential Disneyland experience, the Disneyland Railroad has delighted Guests since the park’s opening day. Its five historic steam locomotives—named for Disney legends and railway pioneers—take Guests on a scenic loop around the park, with stops at Main Street, U.S.A., New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown, and Tomorrowland. Whether for its historical significance or tranquil charm, the Disneyland Railroad remains a must-do for any visit.
