Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Just Welcomed a Baby That Hasn’t Been Born in 20 Years

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge has welcomed its first Ankole cattle baby in over 20 years! Winnie, a resident of the resort's savanna, gave birth to a healthy female calf, marking the first birth of this species at Disney World since 2005. Both mother and calf are doing well and will have some bonding time before they join the other wildlife on the savanna. This birth is particularly special, given the two-decade gap between calves.

You Can't See This Baby at Animal Kingdom Theme Park

Here's the important thing guests need to know: if you want to see the new calf, you will have to visit the savanna at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, not Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park. A lot of people get confused because of the similar names, but the animals at the lodge are completely separate from the theme park even though they're both part of the same Disney brand and African theming.

To visit Animal Kingdom Lodge, guests can either catch a bus from Disney Springs, which provides free transportation to all Disney resort hotels, or book a dining reservation for one of the restaurants at the resort, including Jiko – The Cooking Place, Boma – Flavors of Africa, or Sanaa. The savanna at Animal Kingdom Lodge is beautiful and so peaceful, providing this retreat-from-the-parks atmosphere where you can just watch real wildlife roaming around outside the resort buildings.

Why The Arrival of The Baby Is Such a Big Deal

The fact that this is the first Ankole cattle calf born at Walt Disney World in over 20 years makes this birth particularly significant from a wildlife management perspective. Ankole cattle are a distinctive African breed characterized by their massive curved horns that can span several feet, making them visually striking additions to the savanna that really contribute to the authentic African wildlife atmosphere.

The 20-year gap between births indicates that successfully breeding this species in Disney's managed herd is a significant accomplishment for the animal care teams. These teams work diligently to maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations of the various species living on the savanna properties. Breeding animals is not as simple as just placing them together and hoping for success, particularly for species that need specific environmental conditions, nutrition, and veterinary care to thrive.

But There's Construction Happening

While the new Ankole cattle calf is exciting news, guests planning visits to Animal Kingdom Lodge need to be aware of ongoing refurbishment work underway now and set to continue into early 2027. Construction began at Kidani Village in October 2025 and runs through May 2026, then shifts to Jambo House from May 2026 through January 2027, which is a pretty extensive timeline.

Disney has indicated that guests may see or hear construction activity during daytime hours throughout both phases. Honestly, for a resort that many guests specifically book for its serene, peaceful atmosphere, that's a meaningful consideration. The savanna views and the wildlife don't change during construction because the animals are just doing their thing, regardless of what's happening with the buildings. Still, construction noise and visible work areas are realistic possibilities.

The Dining at Animal Kingdom Lodge Is Amazing

One of the best reasons to visit Animal Kingdom Lodge, even if you're not staying there, is the dining, because the restaurants are consistently ranked among the best Disney has to offer. Jiko offers African-inspired cuisine with an award-winning wine list. Boma features an extensive buffet with African and international selections. Sanaa serves African- and Indian-inspired dishes with views overlooking the savanna, where you can literally watch wildlife while you eat.

With this new addition, guests will gather in the viewing areas to see the cute calf once she and her mother make their debut on the savanna after their bonding period behind the scenes. This will create excitement among animal lovers and Disney resort guests who appreciate the unique wildlife experiences that cannot be found at any other Disney resort property.
