An unfortunate accident occurred at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and Walt Disney World Resort Guests got to watch.
According to WESH, on the morning of Thursday, April 14, Disney World lost one of its beloved Hartmann’s mountain zebras in a shocking accident.
The Orlando-area news station was sent a video of Cast Members working hard to save the Zebra’s life. The Guests reported that “the young zebra ran full speed into a gate after being spooked by two ostriches that had just been released into the safari enclosure.”
Walt Disney World has confirmed the incident saying in an email, “We are heartbroken over the loss of our Hartmann’s mountain zebra that passed away yesterday, and we ask that you keep our dedicated animal care Cast Members in your thoughts.”

After National Geographic’s Disney+ original show about Disney’s Animal Kingdom was released, many animals began to be known by Guests by their given names. It is unclear at this time which member of the Park’s zebra herd was lost this week. It is also still unclear if or how such an accident could have been prevented and what new protocol will be in place to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.
We at Disney Fanatic are personally saddened to hear the news and send our condolences to team of Cast Members that work tirelessly to keep all of the animals safe, happy, and healthy. We personally regard Disney’s Animal Kingdom as a reliable source of good news, allowing us to share pictures and videos of new babies from Disney Parks Blog and exciting rare sightings on Kilimanjaro Safaris and conservation triumphs of various sizes, like its Species Survival Plan Program. But accidents do happen.
We will continue to keep an eye on the good, the bad, and the ugly of Disney Park news, updating our readers as more developments and stories come to light.
