Disney’s Forgotten Hotel May Finally Be Next in Line for Changes

Construction projects are a given at Walt Disney World. From massive towers to refreshed lobbies, Disney rarely lets its resorts sit idle for too long. But for nearly two decades, one property has been mostly left untouched: Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.

The Resort That Time Forgot

The origins of Saratoga go back farther than most people realize. In the 1970s, Disney envisioned a residential community near Lake Buena Vista. That plan never fully took shape, and the space shifted through various uses, eventually evolving into a full-fledged Disney Vacation Club resort in 2004. Over the next five years, its neighborhoods—Congress Park, The Springs, The Carousel, and more—took shape, with the Treehouse Villas debuting in 2009. Since then? Only minimal updates, leaving the resort’s original charm intact but dated.

Surrounded by Progress

Meanwhile, nearly every other resort has been getting attention. The Grand Floridian is in the middle of a dramatic reimagining. Polynesian Village Resort unveiled its new Island Tower this year, with additional enhancements planned. Even value-level resorts like the All-Stars are receiving fresh rooms and updated dining spaces. For guests comparing their options, it’s easy to see why Saratoga feels like it’s lagging behind.

Why No Updates Yet?

The scale of Saratoga Springs is daunting. It’s one of the largest resorts on property, with villas spread across a massive footprint. Renovating a resort of this size would take significant time and resources, which may explain why Disney has prioritized smaller projects first. Still, as Disney Vacation Club continues to expand, it’s hard to imagine Saratoga being ignored indefinitely.

Guest Sentiment

Loyal fans still appreciate Saratoga’s spacious villas, laid-back vibe, and proximity to Disney Springs. Yet the lack of modern touches is undeniable. Today’s Disney resorts are adding themed elements, reimagined dining, and upgraded interiors that make the hotels part of the vacation experience. Saratoga, by contrast, hasn’t offered anything new to generate excitement in years.

What Could Be Next

With other major refurbishments wrapping up across property—from Animal Kingdom Lodge to Fort Wilderness—Saratoga Springs may finally be next on Disney’s list. A refresh would likely bring modernized furniture, updated décor, and perhaps new dining or recreation options to give the resort a fresh identity. Until then, it remains Disney’s most overlooked resort, quietly waiting for the moment when its forgotten status turns into a comeback story

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
