There are so many amazing things to see and do in New York City — from visiting the Statue of Liberty to venturing into Times Square, heading to the top of the Empire State Building, and taking a walk through Central Park, just to name a few. Then, there is the Great White Way — also known as Broadway. Broadway is the ultimate place to go to see some of the greatest on-stage talents in the world.

For almost 30 years, Disney’s The Lion King has been a staple on Broadway. From the costuming to the singing, dancing, and orchestra, everything about The Lion King on Broadway is pure perfection.

Unfortunately, some of those Broadway performers are now living in fear. Several members of The Lion King ensemble have found themselves the victims of sudden and violent assaults. And one of those assaults was caught on camera and recently released.

On August 5, a Lion King violinist left the Minkskoff Theater and was walking down the breezeway. Out of nowhere, the woman was shoved to the ground as the perpetrator tried to steal her very expensive violin. The Lion King musician ended up breaking her wrist in 12 places, an injury that very easily could have ended her career.

Theater security quickly rushed to the woman’s side and got her help as quickly as they could.

Sadly, this was not the first time that a member of The Lion King orchestra had been targeted. Another violinist was targeted twice in the past year, and thieves tried to get away with his instrument.

It is not just Lion King stars who are being attacked, either. In early March, a drummer for Aladdin on Broadway was hit in the head “with a tree branch-like weapon.” The drummer played that night, but later had to go to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion. He has not played on Broadway since.

Thankfully, in the case of The Lion King violinist, the man seen shoving her in the security footage was arrested. Per the New York Post:

Suspect Michael Allen, 34 — who has 15 prior arrests, seven convictions including for assault and an open case for allegedly spitting on and kicking a police officer — was freed without bail on supervised release by Judge Lumarie Maldonado Cruz at the suspect’s Manhattan Criminal Court arraignment Friday, officials said.

The prosecutor on the case demanded high bail, noting Allen’s extensive criminal record, the fact that he has had his probation revoked, and has failed to appear in court more than once.
