Disney’s New Witchcraft Movie Just Received Millions in California Support

Disney hasn't started its biggest marketing push for Hexed just yet, but the studio's newest animated feature is already receiving some major support.

It isn't coming from audiences—at least not yet.

Instead, the backing is coming directly from the State of California, which has selected Hexed as one of the latest recipients of its expanded Film & Television Tax Credit Program.

For a movie that has already generated its share of online debate, it's another notable milestone ahead of its Thanksgiving release.

Disney Benefits From Expanded California Program

California recently broadened its production incentive program by dramatically increasing available funding while extending eligibility to animated films for the first time.

That expansion has allowed Disney Animation's Hexed to qualify alongside DreamWorks Animation's Donkey and an upcoming Pixar production.

The incentive is designed to encourage studios to keep more production work inside California rather than outsourcing animation to other locations offering stronger financial incentives.

Disney welcomed the announcement, with Disney Entertainment Studios Chairman Alan Bergman applauding California officials for expanding opportunities to support the state's entertainment industry.

A Different Kind of Disney Fantasy

Hexed centers on Billie, a teenager who unexpectedly discovers magical powers and finds herself pulled into a hidden witch realm known as Hexe.

Joined by her cautious mother, Alice, Billie embarks on an adventure that uncovers generations of family history while threatening to reshape the magical world around them.

While Disney has explored magic countless times over the decades, stories centered specifically on witches can sometimes spark stronger reactions.

For some parents and religious groups, witchcraft remains a sensitive topic, especially when featured in entertainment aimed at younger audiences. Although fantasy has always been part of Disney storytelling, Hexed has already become a conversation starter because of its premise.

The film has also faced discussion surrounding its artistic direction after fans noticed significant differences between the original concept artwork and the finished animation style revealed later in production.

The Biggest Challenge May Be Awareness

Ironically, the controversy surrounding Hexed may not be its biggest obstacle.

Right now, the larger issue appears to be visibility.

Despite arriving in theaters on one of the biggest movie weekends of the year, the film hasn't generated widespread public awareness. Disney has introduced the project, but casual audiences have yet to embrace it in the way they often do with the company's largest animated releases.

That leaves Hexed in an unusual position.

On one hand, online discussion has helped keep the movie in Disney fan circles. On the other, many potential ticket buyers likely know very little about the film.

Based on current awareness alone, it would be difficult to project a breakout theatrical debut. That assessment could change significantly once Disney launches its full promotional campaign, but at the moment, the movie appears positioned for a quieter opening than many of the studio's recent animated releases.

Fortunately for Disney, there is still time.

With months remaining before Thanksgiving, the studio can introduce audiences to its newest fantasy world through additional trailers, television advertising, promotional partnerships, and theme park marketing.

California has already shown confidence in the project.

Now Disney's challenge is convincing moviegoers to do the same.
