Disney parks are known for their iconic castles, which are the focal points of each resort. These architectural marvels are often more than just decorative—they embody the essence of the park and its stories. But one of Disney's most beloved castles is in need of some serious attention.
Disneyland Paris' Sleeping Beauty Castle has seen better days, and the recent revelations of its deterioration may surprise even the most dedicated Disney fans.

The Glory of Disneyland Paris’ Castle
From the moment Disneyland Paris opened its doors in 1992, the Sleeping Beauty Castle stood out as a beacon of European charm. Unlike other Disney parks with more traditional castle designs, Disneyland Paris embraced a distinctly fairy tale aesthetic.
With its vibrant pink and blue facade, medieval-inspired towers, and intricate stained-glass windows, Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty Castle) has always felt more like a piece of European folklore than a simple theme park icon.

What truly sets it apart, however, is its underground lair. Home to a massive animatronic dragon, La Tanière du Dragon lets guests walk through the castle to encounter a snarling Maleficent in dragon form. This darker element is a rare find among Disney castles, making it a must-see for many park-goers. It is precisely this uniqueness that has made Disneyland Paris' castle an enduring symbol of Disney’s artistic ambition.
Declining Condition Revealed by Recent Photos
In recent years, however, the state of Disneyland Paris' Sleeping Beauty Castle has come under scrutiny. While the resort has invested in the castle’s upkeep, including periodic paint jobs and restoration efforts, new images suggest that more work is desperately needed. Recent photos shared by @InsideDlpCastle on social media have shown visible damage to the castle's stonework, leaving many concerned about its condition.

One image depicted the bridge leading to the castle in a particularly sorry state, with cracks and faded surfaces that have been in need of repair for some time. Some visitors expressed their disappointment, noting that “this bridge has been in need of work for a long time,” while others remarked that fixing the damage would require a much more significant overhaul, with one user stating, “Easier said than done.”
Despite these setbacks, Disneyland Paris has made efforts to address the issues. But many feel that the park is falling short in keeping the castle’s condition up to Disney’s usual standards. As one user wrote, “This requires completely changing this stone,” highlighting the magnitude of the repairs that may be necessary to restore the castle to its former glory.
Disneyland Paris Undergoes Widespread Overhaul
The deteriorating condition of the Sleeping Beauty Castle is just one sign of the larger transformation underway at Disneyland Paris. With both of the resort’s parks undergoing massive makeovers, the situation is far from ideal for the park’s guests.
Walt Disney Studios Park, which is the smallest of the two, is essentially a construction zone. Although the work is expected to pay off with the opening of attractions like the World of Frozen, a new Tangled (2010) ride, and a Lion King (1994)-themed land, the experience for visitors remains less than magical for now.

On the other hand, Disneyland Park—the main park at Disneyland Paris—has been left in the shadows for years. The last new ride to open was Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast in 2006, a concept so outdated that it has already been replaced at other Disney resorts like Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Resort. While fans were hoping that the 2023 D23 Expo would bring news of exciting updates for Disneyland Park, it remains one of the most neglected Disney parks.
Meanwhile, Disney Village, which serves as the resort’s shopping and dining district, is also undergoing significant construction. Recent openings, including two new stores, Disney Style and Disney Glamour, have added a fresh touch, but many areas are still in the midst of major renovations.
A Resort in Need of TLC
Disneyland Paris is undeniably undergoing a massive overhaul, but the condition of the Sleeping Beauty Castle has many wondering if the resort is putting enough focus on maintaining its classic attractions. Despite recent investment in new lands and entertainment options, Disneyland Paris has long struggled to keep up with the maintenance demands of its iconic landmarks.
The fading beauty of the castle, coupled with the neglect of the main park, paints a picture of a resort that has been somewhat left behind in comparison to its more polished counterparts.
While the ongoing projects hold promise for the future, it’s clear that Disneyland Paris needs more than just new attractions—it requires a renewed commitment to maintaining the magic of its classic features. Only time will tell if the park can truly restore its former glory and regain the attention it deserves.
Do you think Disneyland Paris deserves more TLC?
