Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Flops: Rare Warning Issued Over Box Office Disappointment

Disney’s recent live-action Snow White remake, which was intended to reignite the magic of their iconic animated classic, has quickly turned into a box office disappointment. The film, which was expected to charm audiences and continue Disney’s streak of successful remakes, has instead left both fans and industry insiders questioning its future—and the future of Disney’s live-action adaptations in general.

The film, starring Rachel Zegler in the titular role, was initially met with excitement from fans eager to see a fresh take on the beloved fairy tale.

Unfortunately, that excitement quickly turned to disillusionment as Snow White opened with a disappointing $42 million in its domestic debut weekend. Despite expectations of a more significant opening, the numbers dropped drastically in its second weekend, falling by over 60%, with the film barely grossing $15 million.

But it wasn’t just the box office performance that caused concern. The backlash surrounding Snow White has been multi-faceted. Controversial casting choices and public remarks from lead actress Rachel Zegler, who came under fire for comments made during the film’s press tour, further soured the reception.

Zegler’s comments, combined with growing dissatisfaction over the film’s creative direction, culminated in a negative reception that many had not anticipated for a major Disney release.

This poor reception prompted a rare move from IMDB, which issued a warning over “review-bombing” following the film’s release. The movie’s rating on IMDB dropped to a staggering 1.6 stars out of 10, largely due to a significant spike in negative reviews, many of which came from users who had not watched the film.

IMDB responded by informing users that they were aware of the unusual voting activity and had taken steps to address the issue, making this a rare situation for the review site.

Despite the disappointing box office results and public backlash, Snow White has performed somewhat better on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 40% critics rating and a 73% audience score. However, this discrepancy between critic and audience scores does little to alleviate the film’s struggles. Disney’s latest remake is currently one of the least successful films in their recent line of live-action adaptations.

The underperformance of Snow White has already had ripple effects on Disney’s future plans. According to industry insiders, the live-action remake of Tangled, which had been in development for some time, has now been put on hold indefinitely.

Sources within Disney suggest that the underwhelming reception of Snow White has caused the studio to pause further live-action princess remakes, although other upcoming projects like Lilo & Stitch (2025) and Moana (2026) are still moving forward.

What do you think about Snow White’s disappointing performance at the box office? Do you agree with the criticism it’s received, or do you think it’s been unfairly targeted? How do you feel about Disney’s live-action remakes going forward? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. It’s not Rachel Zeglers fault she is the modern day Snow White beautiful and talented. She said a few things that where basically true.
We all know what the problem is and don’t need to be told. It definitely looks like there is worse to come than a Snow White film or any film.

  2. In my opinion, the flop is in direct correlation with the fact that they messed with a classic! If they want to make a live action, just don’t change it. It was loved for the story that it is! Stop with the WOKE CRAP!!! So what, the story is “old fashioned “!!! It’s a classic for a reason. You aren’t going to make it better! You destroy the magic. I really enjoy seeing the animation brought to life, but when the story is changed, it totally ruins it for me.

  3. It is sad that so many are basing their like or dislike of the film on what any of the characters from the film voice on their social media or other forums. If you don’t want to see a film based on their opinions that write that is why you are giving that opinion. I had not paid attention to any negative publishings regarding “Snow White” or anyone else in the film. I love the original cartoon and I couldn’t wait to go see it. I LOVED IT! Not as much as the cartoon but I personally liked it more than the live Lion King. There were differences from the original and my opinion on that is Disney should have called it something else or disclosed that the live action would not be an exact remake. I still encourage my friends/family to go see it. I ENJOYED IT!!!!

  4. Snow White is my favorite Disney movie but they ruins it with all the woke stuff. The majority does NOT want to see this. It is being shoved down our throats and it has to stop!

  5. I disagree. I don’t much care for the original animation version because Princess Happy Housewife is dated. Since I don’t like the original, and it appears that there were major issues with the script, I chose not to see it. I understand that the original.animated version reflects the time period, but it is no longer 1937. I would love to see them use Kate Crackernuts, Snow White and Rose Red, and TamLin and the Goosegirl. My favorite Disney Princesses are Merida, Tianba,,and Belle. They don’t need to withdraw older films, but they do need to.expand their horizons.
