Disneyland Resort unexpectedly closed the Downtown Disney District parking lot on December 28, redirecting arriving guests to the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure. The sudden change affected guests planning to shop and dine at the outdoor complex, without entering the Southern California theme parks.
Sunday Evening Closure Surprises Guests
TikTok user @disney.damsel documented her family's experience arriving at Disneyland Resort on Sunday evening. The group intended to park in the Downtown Disney District surface lot, which offers complimentary parking for three to five hours with validation from participating retailers or restaurants.

The surface lot offers an economical alternative for families visiting only Downtown Disney, eliminating both parking fees and the tram rides required from the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure.
However, Disney cast members informed the family upon arrival that the Downtown Disney lot was closed. The party was directed to the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure, typically used by theme park guests.
“They only made us pay $10 for parking,” the Disneyland Resort guest explained. “But don't think that you're going to go to the Downtown Disney lot, because it's not going to work.”
@disney.damsel If you’re headed to downtown disney, the lot is closed! we were sent to Mickey & Friends but only had to pay $10 for parking. Thankful Disney accommodated the price but a total tease for my toddler getting on the tram! #disney #disneyadult #disneyland #disneyparks #downtowndisney
Disney cast members provided the family with a note to present at Mickey & Friends, where employees reduced the standard $40-45 parking fee to $10.
“Thankful Disney accommodated the price but a total tease for my toddler getting on the tram!” the Disney Park guest wrote.
Capacity and Disneyland Cast Member Parking

The closure likely resulted from multiple factors during the busy holiday period. The Downtown Disney District lot maintains a limited capacity that fills quickly with shoppers and restaurant guests, particularly during peak seasons.
TikTok commenters noted that Disneyland Resort reserves portions of the lot for cast member parking, with hundreds of spots designated for employees working shifts.

“They need at least 250 spots free for CMs to park that's why they close it so guests don't take them all,” @babygulppp explained.
Whether the Downtown Disney District lot reopened on Monday remains unclear. Parking availability fluctuates constantly, so guests driving to Disneyland Resort are advised to check with cast members upon arrival.
