Why Hasn’t Disney Made An Easter Movie?

Disney Easter Movies

If Disney’s known for one holiday, it’s Christmas. Both in the Theme Parks and movies, Disney has proven it knows how to celebrate the holidays (secularly, anyway). But why not Easter?

Cinematically, the entire Easter and Passover season has been dominated by Disney’s competitors with Easter Movies such as Peter Rabbit and Hop as well as “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown.”

Now, Disney has a history of getting into the secularized spirit of the Easter season, most notably with Easter Eggs and an Easter celebration at Tokyo Disney Resort. But in terms of movies and television, the company has continued to fall behind its competitors both creatively and financially. And this reporter wonders why.

It could simply be that it is not worth Disney’s time. Not only is Christmas a far more commercialized holiday compared to Easter. Santa Claus is a far better secular mascot than the Easter Bunny, and the big man appeals to a much wider age range compared to the Bunny. One could argue that any Spring-based events like EPCOT’s Flower and Garden Festival are homages to Easter, but I think that is a bit of a stretch.

Christmas is also much more successfully secularized. In recent years, The Walt Disney Company has made it pretty clear that it wants to steer clear of any religious association save for the minute social media acknowledgment. Easter Sunday and Passover remain extremely religious times of the year. They are also meant to reminisce on very intense and often graphic moments in history that many who were not personally invested would not see as family-friendly or inclusive, as unfortunate as that might be. They don’t even host Easter services at the Resorts anymore.

Now, it should be noted that this is only speculation, and there is no telling at this time if Disney will ever make an Easter movie, but it seems very unlikely that any such change will be presented going forward. Disney will remain a name most synonymous with Christmas, and that is okay.
