*Trigger Warning: This article contains allegations of sexual assault

For six weeks earlier this year, the world watched as Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp went to battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, in a Virginia courtroom. Depp was suing the Aquaman actress for $50 million for defamation. In a 2018 Washington Post OpEd, Heard had called herself a victim of domestic violence. While she did not name Depp, she claimed the abuse happened during the years that the two were married.

For the most part, fans sided with Johnny Depp, even holding up signs outside the courtroom. Heard was vilified, especially after audio was played where she admitted to abusing Depp. In the recording, she told Depp to tell the police that she punched him because no one would believe him.

However, not everyone sided with the popular actor. The jury decided that Depp and Heard were “mutual abusers”, and that was enough for some to believe that Depp deserved all the initial backlash he got.

One person who apparently was on Team Johnny Depp was Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire. And now she is finding herself at the center of A LOT of controversy.

On October 31, Hampshire posted a photo of her Halloween costume, where she was dressed as Johnny Depp. It was not the costume itself — which was a suit and fake tattoos — that people had a problem with. It was the accessories that went along with it.

In the photos, Hampshire’s friend dressed as a clearly distressed Amber Heard. In multiple photos, both Hampshire and her friend are holding a piece of fake poop. That is in reference to Depp accusing Heard of defecating in their bed and then trying to blame one of their dogs. Heard has always denied those allegations. She also said that the dog had gotten into Depp’s stash of marijuana, which caused the accident.

The more disturbing photo is that of Hampshire holding a wine bottle.

During the trial, Heard testified that Depp had held a broken bottle to her throat and threatened to “carve her up” because he believed that she had cheated on him with a costar. She then said that he ripped off her clothes and left her naked. But that wasn’t it.

Heard also alleged that she thought Depp was punching her public bone. However, when she looked, she realized that he was sexually assaulting her with a wine bottle. Heard claimed that the violent assault caused her to lose control of her bladder and left her bleeding from her vagina.

People were absolutely disgusted by Hampshire’s costume. It didn’t matter whether they were team Depp or Heard, they were shocked that someone would seemingly make fun of domestic violence.

It really is a special kind of depraved to keep the costumes going a full year and a half later. @emilyhampshire clearly felt the need to rise to the task.

Schitt’s Creek is an incredibly popular comedy show that aired in both Canada and the United States from 2015 to 2020, winning a total of nine Emmy Awards. So, fans were incredibly disappointed to see a popular actress from the show do something so upsetting.

this is so beyond disappointing to see from @emilyhampshire. words can’t articulate how let down and disgusted i feel

On Reddit, users were especially grossed out by the wine bottle.

Wow. This is obviously in poor taste but, the wine bottle prop? Gross.

Emily Hampshire, also known as Stevie from Schitts Creek, dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween – then deleted the photos from Instagram.

Commenters said that the post was only up for about 10 minutes before the actress took it down because of all the backlash. However, she has not issued a statement or an apology at this time.
