‘Endgame’ Changing the Future of MCU Seven Years Later, More Reports Surface

Marvel Studios is approaching a major turning point as the Avengers prepare to reunite on the big screen, but a time-altering move from 2019 might complicate what comes next for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

For several years, the MCU has navigated uncertain footing. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) soared at the global box office, but later projects such as The Marvels (2023) and Thunderbolts* (2025) encountered hurdles. Now, after a stretch of fluctuating results, Marvel Studios is looking toward a strategic revival.

A key factor in that plan is the return of Joe and Anthony Russo, who will direct Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Feige and the Russos have described these films as the start of a new creative trajectory, one intended to re-energize Marvel’s interconnected universe and chart the course for the next phase.

Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be a massive crossover spectacle. The cast brings together Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Anthony Mackie’s Captain America with beloved stars from the former 20th Century Studios’ X-Men era. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are both set to reprise their roles as Professor X and Magneto, making this one of Marvel’s most significant Multiverse expansions to date.

Another major shift: Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom. His arrival as the iconic Fantastic Four antagonist, previewed in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), introduces a portrayal rumored to be closer to an anti-hero than a traditional villain. This interpretation of Doom could offer a new foil for the Avengers as they navigate a reality fractured by Multiversal threats.

Both upcoming Avengers films were moved from May to December releases, positioning the blockbusters for holiday-season success. Following the December rollout of Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), Disney appears prepared to capitalize on one of the studio’s most consistent box office windows.

But recent insider reports suggest that Doomsday may be dealing with consequences reaching all the way back to Avengers: Endgame.

Emerging rumors portray Doctor Doom’s debut as unexpectedly emotional. Sources cited by Comic Book Movie claim that Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Victor Von Doom is defined by a personal tragedy: the death of his wife and son in a violent accident that leaves him physically scarred.

Speculation suggests Doom eventually realizes the accident may be tied to Steve Rogers’ time-jumping decisions in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Instead of being motivated solely by ambition, this Doom could be fueled by a need for justice and closure, reshaping him into a figure whose goals are rooted in pain rather than conquest.

Marvel has often found impact by giving its antagonists human motivations, and this rumored storyline continues that approach. It also reflects reports that the Russos’ return is focused on expanding both the emotional breadth and the visual scale of the MCU, supported by writer Stephen McFeely and a wide roster of returning characters.

Talk of multiple Doom variants and far-reaching Multiversal repercussions continues to circulate. Although Marvel Studios has not confirmed any details, the rumors suggest a film where the stakes are high on both a cosmic and an intimate level.

Production updates from The Hollywood Reporter provide a clearer picture of the road ahead.

“AGBO and the Russos are in post-production on Avengers: Doomsday, with additional photography expected to take place in the spring before cameras roll on Avengers: Secret Wars in the summer,” the outlet wrote.

This timeline aligns with reports that the ending of Doomsday is still open to adjustments, with reshoots likely occurring right before Secret Wars begins filming. Those changes may shape how the fifth Avengers film lands its final moments.

As the project continues to expand, speculation has intensified about potential character fatalities. Fan discussions propose that Thor (Hemsworth), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) could be among the heroes who may not survive the events of Doomsday.
