Universal’s Epic Universe Under Fire: Lawsuit Claims Harry Potter Ride “Plagued” by Malfunctions

The New Lawsuit Explained

For many theme park fans, stepping inside a new park represents more than just another vacation stop — it’s the promise of immersion, innovation, and unforgettable storytelling. That expectation has been especially strong surrounding Universal Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe, a highly anticipated addition that has captured global attention for its cutting-edge attractions and immersive lands inspired by beloved franchises.

Among those experiences, the Wizarding World continues to hold a unique emotional connection for guests. From detailed environments to ambitious ride systems, Universal’s Harry Potter attractions have built a reputation for blending storytelling with technological spectacle. Fans often describe these rides as must-do experiences — emotional, cinematic, and worth traveling across the country to experience.

But even in spaces designed to feel magical, moments of disruption can quickly shift guest perception. Visitors who expect seamless adventures may instead find themselves navigating uncertainty when rides pause unexpectedly or technical challenges arise. While occasional downtime is part of operating complex attractions, reports of repeated interruptions can spark concern among even the most devoted fans.

The Anticipation Surrounding Epic Universe Created Enormous Expectations for Next-Generation Attractions

Epic Universe represents one of Universal Destinations & Experiences’ most ambitious projects, with the company emphasizing innovation, scale, and next-level ride technology. Attractions tied to globally recognized intellectual properties have been positioned as flagship experiences meant to redefine theme park storytelling.

The Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry attraction, in particular, has drawn attention for its ambitious ride system and narrative scope. Universal describes the experience as a journey through the Ministry of Magic featuring thrilling encounters and expansive environments. Guests ride in 16-passenger omnidirectional lifts capable of moving in multiple directions, allowing for dynamic scenes and cinematic motion.

That technological ambition, however, also introduces complexity. Advanced ride systems require precise coordination between motion, projection, and safety systems — meaning even minor interruptions can feel dramatic to riders immersed in the story.

A Growing Pattern of Ride Interruptions Has Quietly Fueled Online Conversations Among Fans

While Epic Universe has generated excitement, online discussions have also reflected guest experiences involving downtime and unexpected stops. Content creators and visitors have shared stories on platforms like Reddit describing delays, extended pauses, and maintenance interruptions related to Battle at the Ministry since its debut.

Some posts referenced guests being temporarily stopped on the attraction, while others mentioned early operational challenges. These accounts have circulated widely within the theme park community, contributing to a broader conversation about the balance between innovation and reliability.

Social media reactions often reflect both empathy and curiosity. Fans on Reddit have debated whether such issues are typical growing pains for new attractions, while others expressed concern about how repeated interruptions might affect guest confidence in major headliner rides.

Holiday Excitement Reportedly Turned Into a Frightening Moment for Two Visiting Guests

The conversation intensified following allegations brought forward by two guests who say their experience went beyond inconvenience. According to separate lawsuits, twin brothers Derrick Burrough of Tennessee and Erick Burrough of Georgia claim they were injured while riding Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry during a Christmas Day visit with family.

The lawsuits allege the ride malfunctioned while they were seated, causing the vehicle to stop abruptly. The brothers claim they were “thrusted erratically” in their seats, resulting in significant neck and back injuries that required ongoing treatment.

Represented by the Morgan & Morgan law firm, both plaintiffs are seeking damages exceeding $50,000. The filings claim the injuries led to physical impairment, medical expenses, lost wages, and a diminished ability to enjoy daily life.

Attorney John Morgan stated that theme parks have a responsibility to prioritize guest safety, alleging the attraction had experienced repeated malfunctions and hard stops prior to the incident. Universal representatives had not publicly responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.

The Lawsuits Arrive Amid Broader Scrutiny Surrounding Epic Universe Ride Safety

The case adds to a series of legal claims tied to Epic Universe attractions. Previous lawsuits were filed following the death of Kissimmee resident Kevin Rodriguez Zavala after riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster. Zavala’s family reached a settlement with Universal, after which additional riders filed separate injury claims connected to the same attraction.

While lawsuits do not establish fault, they often influence public perception and renew conversations about ride reliability, operational procedures, and guest safety expectations. For a park positioned as a major leap forward for Universal Destinations & Experiences, such incidents can generate heightened scrutiny.

For future visitors, the situation may not diminish excitement surrounding Epic Universe but could shape how guests approach high-intensity attractions. Some travelers may pay closer attention to ride advisories, while others may view the reports as isolated incidents within a complex entertainment environment.

As discussion continues across social media and fan communities, the emotional response has been mixed. Some fans expressed sympathy for the guests involved, while others emphasized their own positive experiences and confidence in Universal’s safety standards.

What remains clear is that Epic Universe continues to capture both excitement and attention — not only for its groundbreaking attractions but also for the conversations that follow when expectations collide with unexpected events.

What do you think? Does news like this change how you approach major new attractions, or does the excitement of immersive theme park innovation outweigh the concerns?

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
