Star Wars is entering a new phase, both on and off the screen. As Lucasfilm charts its next moves under updated leadership, a familiar title is unexpectedly finding its way back into the spotlight.

The franchise’s theatrical return begins with The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, arriving in May 2026. That momentum will carry into 2027 with Star Wars: Starfighter, helmed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling.
At the same time, Disney+ continues to serve as a major hub for Star Wars storytelling. Ahsoka is set to return for another season, while Star Wars: Maul–Shadow Lord has proven to be a standout success.
The animated series has consistently ranked at the top of Disney+ charts, with data from FlixPatrol placing it in the number one position for television content during the week of April 23, 2026. The strong performance highlights the continued influence of Dave Filoni in shaping Star Wars animation.
Not every project has seen the same level of success. While Andor was widely praised, other series—including The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte—received more mixed reactions from audiences.

The Acolyte, developed by Leslye Headland, offered a different perspective on the Star Wars timeline. Set in the High Republic era, it followed a cast led by Amandla Stenberg, alongside Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Rebecca Henderson, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Despite its ambition, the series was canceled after one season, with Disney executive Alan Bergman citing financial challenges tied to its large-scale production.
However, recent streaming data suggests the story may not be entirely finished. The Acolyte has reappeared in Disney+ rankings, landing at number nine according to FlixPatrol. For a show that has been off the air for nearly two years, the placement points to continued audience curiosity.
The resurgence may be linked to the popularity of Maul–Shadow Lord, which explores similar themes surrounding the Force and its complexities. As viewers gravitate toward those ideas, The Acolyte appears to be benefiting from renewed interest.

Plans for a second season suggested that the series would significantly expand its scope. Remaining in the High Republic era, the story was expected to further examine the growing tension beneath the Jedi Order’s dominance.
One of the defining aspects of the show was its focus on characters operating in morally uncertain territory. That creative choice set it apart, even as it divided audiences. Future developments pointed toward a stronger connection with the sequel trilogy. Qimir’s storyline hinted at an origin for the Knights of Ren, potentially positioning him as an early figure tied to Kylo Ren.
This approach would have reframed the group as part of a long-standing tradition, expanding their role within the broader Star Wars mythology. The second season was also expected to delve deeper into Sith history. The inclusion of Darth Plagueis would have connected the narrative to established lore, while also setting the stage for the eventual rise of Emperor Palpatine.

Although these storylines were never fully realized, they offer insight into the scale of what the series intended to achieve. By linking different eras of Star Wars, The Acolyte aimed to provide additional context for events across the franchise.
With Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now guiding Lucasfilm after Kathleen Kennedy, the franchise is entering a new chapter. Whether that includes revisiting The Acolyte remains to be seen, but its recent streaming performance suggests it still has an audience.
The Acolyte is currently streaming on Disney+.

I in my most humble opinion think feel & believe this is the best Star Wars show I have seen. From the first episode I was completely hooked & intrigued 100%. I was locked in from the start to the finish I absolutely loved the story telling the character building, I loved all the characters from bad to good. I think this show really made me even more of a fan of the franchise as a whole & believe it contributes more to the entire franchise than I seen it getting credit for via internet outlets. I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since a kid & will forever be no matter the next steps in the franchise but I do personally want more seasons & am hopeful in getting those. If anyone out there is reading this & cares about my opinion please please make more seasons, I can even help with playing a role if you need a dedicated loyal & over enthusiastic fellow Star Wars fanatic.
I just watched this and love it! I hope to see more of this story, and the connections with the sith in the near future.
