Family of Jim Henson Refutes News of Historic Sale to Controversial Religious Group

The Jim Henson Studio Lot, located on La Brea Avenue, holds substantial historical value within the entertainment industry. Originally established as the Charlie Chaplin Studios, it later became A&M Studios before being acquired by the Jim Henson Company in 1999 for $12.5 million. This property has not only been a significant site for film production but has also become synonymous with the legacy of Jim Henson and his iconic Muppets.

The studio was a creative hub for Henson and his team, enabling the production of beloved works that have deeply influenced family entertainment. Spanning generations, this historical lot continues to evoke nostalgia for many fans and industry professionals. It embodies the whimsy and creativity that Henson infused into his projects, making it a cultural landmark in its own right.

Recently, rumors emerged suggesting that the Jim Henson Studio Lot was nearing a sale to the Church of Scientology. These reports, initially circulated by various media outlets, have sparked a wave of speculation and concern among fans. Many expressed shock at the prospect due to the property’s profound association with Henson and the Muppet franchise.

In response to the growing speculation, a spokesperson for the Henson family issued an official statement, clearly denying any ongoing negotiations involving the Church of Scientology.

According to the statement to Variety:

“In regards to recent rumors about the sale of the La Brea studio lot, the Henson family is not in any business dealings with the Church of Scientology, and that organization is not in consideration as a potential buyer of the property,” a spokesperson for the Jim Henson family said in a statement. “It is still the family’s intention to move The Jim Henson Company to a new location it can share with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, but at this time the family is not in escrow with any buyer.”

While reports suggested that the sale was imminent, the details regarding how the Church of Scientology might utilize the studio remain undisclosed. Speculative discussions online have prompted various viewpoints, with concerns expressed about the future of the lot's creative output if the rumored sale were to proceed.

Nonetheless, as of now, the Henson family has firmly denied any business dealings with the religious organization.

While the Henson family is keen to ensure the legacy is preserved, uncertainties linger. Speculation about the future of the lot remains, but the Henson family's recent statements offer reassurance that they are committed to maintaining the studio’s role within the Muppet cosmos.

This is not the first time that The Muppets have made headlines and worried Disney fans in recent months. In August, Disney hosted its biennial D23 Expo, and Disney Parks Chairman Josh D'Amaro shared that the city of Monstropolis from Monsters, Inc. (2001) was coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Fans began to worry that Muppet*Vision 3D would be torn down to make way for the new land. Disney did not confirm this. The rumors then shifted to speculating that Disney would tear down the Star Wars Launch Bay and make that area the new home of Monstropolis.

Do you think Disney should buy the iconic Jim Henson Studio Lot? Or should it be sold to someone else? Let us know in the comments!
