When actress, Golden Girl, comedy icon, and Disney Legend Betty White passed away on New Year’s Eve, just weeks from her 100th birthday, many of her fans were devastated. Social media has been filled with posts honoring Betty White and her legacy — but now, there’s a concrete way to honor Betty!

A campaign has been started by Betty White fans to honor Betty White’s famous love of animals and her passion for animal causes like animal welfare; on January 17, which would have been the late Betty White’s 100th birthday, anyone and everyone is encouraged to donate to their local animal shelter in Betty White’s name as a birthday celebration for her.

Over the course of her lifetime, Betty White was involved with multiple animal welfare organizations and she was known as a lifelong animal lover (particularly dogs), so this tribute to her feels extremely appropriate! She was given the 1987 Humane Award by the American Veterinary Medical Association and was also involved with the American Humane organization and the Morris Animal Foundation. The goal is for everyone to donate five dollars, but many people are choosing to donate more than five dollars in support of their local shelters and animals.

The challenge has been shared and supported by many celebrities as well as the general public, and the hashtag #BettyWhiteChallenge is being used by everyone who supports the campaign or who is planning to make a donation in Betty White’s name on January 17!

Since Betty White was arguably one of America’s most beloved celebrities and was loved by audiences of all different ages, it’s not surprising that the Emmy Award-winning actress has such enthusiastic fans. Some younger fans might only know Betty White from her hilarious appearance as the grandmother in the Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy The Proposal (2009), but most people know her for her work on The Golden Girls (1985-1992) as Rose Nylund.

Betty White actually held the Guinness World Record for longest TV career in 2018, and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! She has also received many other awards and accolades, including American Comedy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award.
