Fantasmic! Evacuated Twice at Disney World, Show Safety in Question

One of Walt Disney World Resort’s nighttime spectaculars, Fantasmic!, has suffered a string of technical difficulties within just a few days. Thousands of guests were forced to leave mid-show during two separate evacuations.

Fantasmic! has been a staple of Disney’s Hollywood Studios since 1998, immersing guests in Mickey Mouse’s dreamworld, where he battles some of Disney’s most iconic villains. After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the show returned in 2022 with new sequences from Frozen 2 (2019) and Moana (2016). Unfortunately, things haven’t gone smoothly in recent weeks.

On March 1, Reddit user u/Chemical-Being1834 reported that the show abruptly ended mid-performance, forcing guests to leave the amphitheater. One commenter, claiming to be a Disney cast member, cited a “small technical risk” as the reason for the abrupt stop:

“Nothing bad. It was a technical thing related to effects. Can’t give much more detail than that without getting too close for comfort… Nobody hurt! Just a small technical risk that halted the show.”

Maleficent or Mickey to Blame?

Just two days later, on March 3, another Fantasmic! performance was cut short, this time during Mickey Mouse’s climactic battle against Maleficent. TikTok user @pedalaluisa shared a video of the moment, claiming to have heard someone yell “Gas! Gas! Gas!” before the show was stopped.

However, most Disney Parks fans disagreed, pointing out that the sound was likely part of the show’s usual audio track, where Maleficent screams as Mickey defeats her. Still, some commenters suggested there was reason to be concerned.

@tylerrobbins619 alleged that the Maleficent dragon had been “leaking” earlier in the week, and an attempted repair had failed, leading to a safety stop:

“Yeah, you did not hear them yelling that, nor would you smell it. However, that is why they stopped. The dragon was leaking, it had been leaking earlier in the week and the repair failed.”

Another theory blames the pyrotechnics in Mickey Mouse’s sword, which reportedly failed to go off properly. According to @aflamingmooncosplay, this posed a risk to performers, forcing an emergency halt:

“His sword is supposed to have pyro. It didn’t go off. Show halt for safety.”

As with most technical difficulties, Walt Disney World Resort has not issued an official statement about the repeated show stops. However, Fantasmic! remains on the official Disney’s Hollywood Studios entertainment schedule, meaning no major refurbishment is planned—at least for now.

For guests looking to experience this unforgettable nighttime spectacular, it’s best to arrive early or consider booking a Fantasmic! Dining Package, which offers reserved seating.
