An emergency situation forced the temporary closure of Festival of the Lion King at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park on Sunday morning after what appeared to be a fire triggered alarms and activated the sprinkler system in the attraction's queue area.
The incident occurred on one of the park's busiest days in recent weeks, as thousands of guests arrived for a final chance to experience DINOSAUR and other DinoLand U.S.A. attractions before their permanent closure. While crowds focused on that emotional farewell, a potentially dangerous situation was unfolding across the park in Africa.
Sprinklers Activate in Festival of the Lion King Queue

Around 10:30 a.m. on February 1, social media reports began surfacing about an emergency at Festival of the Lion King. X user @bmodealex documented the scene with photographs taken from outside the attraction's queue:
So I know everyone is focused on Dino but uhhhh folk has the fire alarm going off and this sprinkler is drenching the queue

The images show sprinkler systems actively discharging water throughout the queue area. Cast members who normally staff positions inside the line were relocated outside, and multiple Disney leaders—the company's term for upper management personnel—were present at the scene, suggesting the situation required significant attention beyond standard operational issues.

The 10:00 a.m. performance of Festival of the Lion King had already started when the emergency began.
Extended Closure Throughout Midday
According to the My Disney Experience app, Festival of the Lion King remained closed until 2:00 p.m., canceling three consecutive performances scheduled for 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m. The show resumed normal operations at 2:00 p.m. and continued through its 5:00 p.m. performance.

Festival of the Lion King typically runs once per hour starting at 10:00 a.m., with each performance lasting approximately 30 minutes. The show draws large crowds due to its reputation as one of Disney's highest-quality live entertainment offerings, featuring professional singers, dancers, acrobats, puppeteers, and specialty performers executing fire juggling, knife throwing, and trapeze acts.
No Official Statement From Disney
Walt Disney World Resort hasn't issued any public comment regarding the emergency situation. The company rarely acknowledges individual operational disruptions unless they affect large portions of the resort or pose ongoing safety concerns.

As of Sunday evening, Festival of the Lion King appeared to be operating on its regular schedule with no indication of continued problems. The nature and cause of the fire remain unclear.
Challenging Day at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park
The Festival of the Lion King emergency added to an already complicated operational day at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Freezing overnight temperatures—rare for Central Florida—created multiple challenges throughout Walt Disney World Resort.
Kali River Rapids, the park's water raft attraction, experienced a delayed opening due to cold weather. Frozen fountains appeared across Walt Disney World Resort property. Despite these conditions, attendance remained extremely high as guests rushed to experience DinoLand U.S.A. before its closure.

DINOSAUR, the anchor attraction of the closing land, also faced technical difficulties on Sunday and remained closed for portions of the day—frustrating guests hoping for final rides before the attraction's permanent closure.
DINOSAUR, Restaurantosaurus, and various Quick-Service dining locations throughout DinoLand U.S.A. officially closed permanently on Monday, February 1. Other sections of the land, including Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama and The Boneyard playground, had already closed in phases throughout 2025.

The space will be demolished and rebuilt as Pueblo Esperanza, a Tropical Americas-themed land featuring attractions based on Encanto (2021) and a rethemed version of DINOSAUR inspired by the Indiana Jones franchise. Walt Disney Imagineers have stated the Indiana Jones attraction will differ from Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure, despite sharing the same ride system and track layout.
Pueblo Esperanza is scheduled to debut in 2027, though Walt Disney World Resort hasn't specified an exact opening date.
