Universal Orlando Shuts Down Attractions as Rare Winter Weather Hits Florida

It’s not often that weather becomes the main attraction at a theme park. But during a historic freeze in Central Florida, Universal Orlando Resort found itself battling conditions that most guests—and even longtime locals—had never experienced before.

Temperatures dropped into the mid-20s overnight, bringing ice, wind chill, and operational challenges that Florida theme parks simply aren’t designed to handle. As the cold lingered, Universal moved quickly to protect guests, employees, and ride systems.

One of the earliest warning signs came from Seuss Landing. Guests arriving in the morning found One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish frozen over, with ice visibly coating parts of the attraction. Videos quickly spread online, capturing disbelief from visitors who never imagined seeing ice at a Universal park.

From there, closures escalated. At Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal shut down multiple high-profile attractions. Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride were all taken offline due to safety and mechanical concerns.

Water rides posed the greatest risk. Frozen pipes and ride systems can cause extensive damage, which is why guests observed water being removed from Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls. The move may have disappointed visitors, but it likely prevented weeks—or months—of downtime later.

@ourfavoriteescapes Ok this weather is no joke. It SAYS 41 degrees but…. The wind has been clocked at 30+. All the outdoor rides at Islands of Adventure have been closed since 4pm. With the wind it feels like 15 degrees. Conditions weren’t much better at Universal Studios Florida. The Trolls Rollercoaster faced delayed operations, while Hogwarts Express shut down completely, disrupting park-to-park travel. Men in Black: Alien Attack also closed, reducing capacity even further.

Over at Epic Universe, guests encountered even more closures. Dragon Racer’s Rally, Mine-Cart Madness, and Stardust Racers all went down as temperatures stayed below safe operating levels.

Then came the biggest announcement of the day: Universal’s Volcano Bay would remain closed entirely. With freezing temperatures and cold winds, operating a water park wasn’t just uncomfortable—it was unsafe.

Social media captured the moment in real time. Guests wrapped in jackets, empty ride entrances, and frozen attractions painted a picture of a resort adapting on the fly. For many visitors, it was frustrating. For others, it became a once-in-a-lifetime experience they’ll never forget.

While inconvenient, Universal’s response demonstrated how seriously the resort takes extreme weather—even when it’s something Florida rarely sees. In the end, the historic freeze reshaped the parks, the guest experience, and expectations for what “winter” can mean in Orlando.
