For nearly four decades, the Ghostbusters franchise has been delighting fans with its perfect mix of supernatural adventure, humor, and heart.
Following the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), which grossed $204.3 million worldwide, and its sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), which did not set the box office ablaze, or impress fans and critics like its predecessor, the series continues to grow in new and exciting ways.
Now, Dark Horse Comics has officially announced its upcoming comic book miniseries, “Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest,” an epic four-issue adventure that continues to expand upon the world established in the two recent films but with a swashbuckling twist on ghostbusting lore, set to release this May.

The story begins with the new Ghostbusters adapting to their growing notoriety, but their personal lives remain front and center. Trevor (played by Finn Wolfhard in the films) is trying to organize a “friendiversary” celebration for him and Lucky (played by Celeste O’Connor), while his sister Phoebe (played by McKenna Grace) attempts to connect with someone outside of her social media following.
These moments quickly give way to chaos when the ghost of Captain Kidd—summoned by a mysterious saber—threatens to turn New York City into a ghostly pirate haven. Dark Horse has shared the synopsis, which offers a tantalizing glimpse into the action:
“In ‘Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest,’ the Ghostbusters’ increasing notoriety is throwing them for a loop. While Trevor steadies himself by trying to plan a ‘friendiversary’ celebration for him and Lucky, Phoebe meets someone who might be a real friend instead of just a social media follower. But friendships new and old have to take a back seat to more immediate concerns when a ghostly saber summons the ghost of Captain Kidd and threatens to transform NYC into a ghostly pirate town!”
Series writer David M. Booher has crafted a story that bridges history and the paranormal. He explained to Nerdist.com, “When I researched ghostly happenings in New York City, I came across the true story of Captain Kidd. He owned a house near Wall Street with his family.”
“Turns out, historians are divided on whether he was the fearsome pirate we know or actually framed for piracy. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring him back to ask him ourselves. What could be more fun than having our Ghostbusters stop an angry Captain Kidd from turning Manhattan into a 17th-century ghost pirate den?”
Artists Aviv Or and Cris Peter bring this swashbuckling ghost story to life with vivid, dynamic visuals that perfectly capture the quirky tone of the Ghostbusters universe. Nerdist.com’s exclusive sneak peek of issue #1 features detailed images showcasing pirate-themed hauntings, glowing supernatural artifacts, and, of course, plenty of proton pack action.
“Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest” also builds on the success of “Ghostbusters: Back in Town,” which bridged the timeline between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire. With Dark Horse continuing the comic legacy first established by IDW Publishing, fans are eager to see how this new chapter will expand the lore of the Ghostbusters universe.
Issue #1 of “Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest” will be available on May 21.
