Disney Demolishes Original Part of Grand Floridian Resort To Make Way for a Bar

A beloved symbol of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is being taken down, and longtime fans are feeling the loss. As part of an ongoing renovation at the luxury Walt Disney World Resort hotel, Disney has begun dismantling the golden birdcage that has stood in the resort’s lobby since it opened 36 years ago.

The structure, once home to real birds and a decorative tree, has been a centerpiece of the Grand Floridian’s Victorian aesthetic for decades. Now, it’s being removed to make way for a brand-new lobby bar, marking the first time the resort will offer a full-service bar in its grand atrium.

Earlier this month, Disney unveiled design plans for the renovated lobby, showcasing an upscale bar inspired by the iconic birdcage. According to the announcement, the new space will feature ornate brass accents, custom woodwork, and stunning stained glass. Bird-themed murals and glass panels will pay tribute to the original installation that once welcomed generations of Disney Park guests.

Modern Upgrades, Mixed Reactions

While Disney has assured guests that the Grand Floridian will retain its timeless charm—including its Victorian-style elevator, grand piano, and soaring atrium—some fans are skeptical. The shift toward modern touches, especially a bar in the main lobby, has drawn mixed reactions online.

Some visitors have expressed concern that the changes could dilute the resort’s family-friendly atmosphere. Others feel nostalgic about the birdcage’s removal, pointing to it as a symbol of Disney tradition that’s being cast aside for commercial upgrades.

“Current status of the Grand Floridian lobby birdcage disassembly 😔” wrote X user @FiBelleFi, sharing a photo of the structure surrounded by construction walls.

On Wednesday, WDWNT published a video update showing crews had already removed the birdcage’s roof and base. The rest of the birdcage will be gone soon.

The refurbishment of the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa lobby will continue through November 2025. Much of the Deluxe Disney Resort hotel remains open, including the Monorail station and pool areas. However, Walt Disney World Resort has announced that the annual lobby Gingerbread House display will not return this holiday season due to the ongoing work.
