Disney Cast Member Forces Open Elevator Door To Save Guests

Forget Captain America, Spider-Man, and other Avengers Campus favorites! A Disneyland Resort cast member transformed into a superhero for guests stuck in an elevator on the Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) ride.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! was the first Xandarian attraction in the United States, preceding Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT. Walt Disney Imagineering transformed the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror into the centerpiece of the Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure Park. Unlike its Walt Disney World Resort counterpart, this attraction doesn’t require guests to obtain a boarding group via Virtual Queue to ride.

“Taneleer Tivan, a.k.a. the Collector, has brought his unique collection of fantastical fauna, relics and species from across the cosmos to earth for the very first time,” Disneyland Resort writes. “He offers to show you his newest acquisition… the Guardians of the Galaxy. Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax and Groot are held captive in electrified glass cases that dangle perilously over an abyss. When Rocket escapes, he commandeers a gantry lift and enlists your help on a harrowing mission to rescue his fellow Guardians. Prepare to unleash intergalactic mayhem from the top of the fortress to the bottom, as one of Star-Lord’s awesome mixtapes blasts a classic tune!”

The Guardians of the Galaxy ride is one of the Southern California Disney Parks’ most popular attractions. But a recent experience on Mission: BREAKOUT! might deter some Disney Park guests from rushing for an Individual Lightning Lane reservation anytime soon!

Vanessa (@vanessa25da on TikTok) shared this short video of a group of guests trapped in a sealed elevator on Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!. She was “not mad about it,” but other guests seemed less enthused!

The guests sat in the elevator for a while before a Disney cast member spoke on an intercom.

“We’re going to call our maintenance team to get you out,” the Disney employee said. “Anything you can call out to us, we can hear and see you.”

Eventually, a maintenance cast member manually opened the elevator doors and explained how the guests would evacuate. He reassured them that the ride would be locked and in a safe position, so there would be no drops or heights to worry about.

“I’m going to go ahead and close these doors, and I’ll be back in just a minute,” the cast member said.

Cast members slowly lowered the elevator into a backstage maintenance bay.

“We’re free!” one of the Disney Park guests exclaimed.

While ride closures are frequently the result of dropped personal items or inappropriate guest behavior, Vanessa explained that this Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! breakdown was caused by a technical issue. The ride resumed normal operations before this article’s publication.
