Snape 2.0? HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Casting Stirs Online Backlash

HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter reboot has reportedly cast its first major role, and the news is already stirring up controversy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, British actor Paapa Essiedu is in talks to portray Severus Snape, the complex Potions professor famously played by the late Alan Rickman in the original films. While Essiedu’s talent is widely recognized, the casting has sparked heated debate among fans.

The reboot, in general, has been marred by controversy since its announcement. Many fans of the original series, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, are skeptical of the need for a new adaptation. Additionally, the franchise has faced reputational challenges in recent years, primarily due to backlash against its creator, J.K. Rowling, over her comments on transgender issues. HBO, however, remains steadfast in its commitment to the reboot, emphasizing Rowling’s creative influence on the project.

The new series is set to premiere in 2026, with one season dedicated to each of the seven books in the Harry Potter series. Like the original films, the show will follow a young cast through their journey, allowing them to grow into their roles over the decade-long project.

Essiedu Splits Fans as Snape

Paapa Essiedu, known for his critically acclaimed performance in I May Destroy You, is rumored to take on the iconic role of Severus Snape. At 33, Essiedu is notably closer in age to the character as described in the books than Rickman was when he originated the role. His extensive theater background, including stints with the Royal Shakespeare Company, has earned him widespread praise, making him a strong candidate to bring new depth to the character.

However, Essiedu’s potential casting has not been universally celebrated. Some fans have criticized the choice, focusing on the casting of a Black actor in a role previously played by a white actor. Online backlash includes complaints about the perceived departure from Rickman’s portrayal, with one user writing, “Cancel the whole show. I bet he’s an amazing actor, but he’s NOT Severus Snape.”

Others argue that casting Essiedu may place undue pressure on the actor, given the polarized environment surrounding the franchise. “Casting a Black man as Snape is honestly such a cruel set up,” one user commented. “The show doesn’t look more progressive; you’re just putting him in the line of fire.”

Despite the negativity, many fans have rallied behind Essiedu, praising his credentials and pointing out the opportunity to reinterpret the character. Supporters highlight his Shakespearean background and critical acclaim, arguing that Essiedu’s talent can bring fresh layers to Snape’s complex personality.

“He’s literally an RSC actor. He’s played Hamlet and Romeo, both to critical acclaim. If this news is true, the character of Snape is in excellent hands,” one user noted. Facts.

  1. Like everything else when it comes to a reboot / remake why do they always change the characters totally, the books said nothing about any professor being of African descent, and especially a major role like Professor Snape, what’s next casting Harry as a transgendered female and Hermonie male. I totally love all the Harry Potter movies along with the fantastic beast series well with the exception of the last one, but if Disney continues the Woke direction you will lose me as a fan and I’m fairly
    certain many others.
