Is Disney Cruise Jewelry a Scam? Guest’s $2,000 Necklace Begins to Disintegrate

For many guests aboard Disney cruises, indulging in luxury shopping is a part of the experience. Onboard the Disney Wish, one guest spent over $2,000 on a Minnie Mouse necklace, expecting a high-quality piece of jewelry. However, what should have been a magical purchase quickly turned into a nightmare.

A Reddit user, known as loveholic012, shared her shocking experience with the Disney Cruise community, recounting how a necklace purchased from Diamonds International, a prominent retailer aboard the Disney Wish, began to deteriorate after two years.

The necklace, which was marketed as containing onyx, started to peel and reveal what seemed to be a cheap paste underneath, leaving the guest not only disappointed but also feeling scammed.

The Reddit Post That Sparked Outrage

According to loveholic012, she bought the Minnie Mouse necklace on the Disney Wish in 2022. The necklace was marketed as having genuine onyx, with part of it shaped like Minnie Mouse ears. After wearing it occasionally for a while, she began wearing it every day just a couple of months ago, only to notice that the once-glossy black part of the necklace began to come off.

The now-matte coating on the Minnie ears did not resemble onyx anymore. Instead, it looked more like a cheap paste, raising suspicions that the necklace had been misrepresented.

Here is the Reddit post that shared the details:

“Purchased this necklace on the Wish 2 years ago and wore it on and off until about 2 months ago, where I’ve been wearing it every day. I noticed today that the black was coming off from the Minnie ears. I was told the black was onyx, but it actually looks like paste? It was shiny like onyx before, but now it looks matte, so I’m guessing the coating came off.”

This post quickly gained traction with hundreds of upvotes and sparked a chain of comments.

Many Reddit users shared their sympathy and frustrations, with many suggesting that the guest had indeed been misled by Diamonds International, a company frequently criticized for its practices.

Diamonds International Under Fire

In the comments, several users warned other cruise-goers about purchasing jewelry on Disney cruises, citing Diamonds International’s reputation for subpar products.

One commenter wrote, “Diamonds International is corrupt, and Disney knows it. Send complaints!”

This statement mirrors a recurring theme in the post — disappointment with both the quality of the jewelry and the lack of transparency from the retailer.

One comment from a different user added, “I purchased two Pandora rings on the Wish and both broke within a week of getting off the ship. I couldn’t return them to a regular Pandora store because I didn’t have a Pandora receipt. It took months of back and forth with customer service before I received a gift card for the value I paid onboard. So even Pandora isn’t a safe bet!”

Other stories and complaints about jewelry purchases gone wrong have surfaced, with many people reporting similar experiences of purchasing what they thought were luxury items, only for them to break or deteriorate shortly after disembarking the cruise.

The online community has since warned others to be cautious when considering jewelry purchases from onboard stores.

Could Disney Do Something About This?

The guest in question, loveholic012, has a limited ability to resolve the situation. Since the necklace was purchased two years ago, it’s unlikely she’ll be able to receive a refund or exchange, especially considering it was sold through a third-party vendor.

However, some Reddit users have expressed hope that Disney might step in, given that the purchase was made aboard one of their ships. While it’s not guaranteed that Disney would provide assistance, there is some hope that they may intervene as part of their commitment to customer service.

The situation highlights the issues with third-party retailers operating aboard Disney ships, as well as the lack of oversight regarding the products they sell.

One commenter pointed out, “I don’t think Disney should be partnering with companies that are known for scamming customers. It’s damaging to their reputation.”

A Growing Wave of Complaints

Diamonds International, the retailer at the center of the controversy, has faced multiple complaints and negative reviews, with some guests taking their concerns to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). While the company’s response to these complaints remains unclear, it’s evident that many customers are dissatisfied with the quality of jewelry they’ve received.

Many are now questioning whether Disney should be held accountable for the poor experiences some of their guests have had with Diamonds International.

Though Disney may not directly handle the transactions, their endorsement and the fact that the vendor operates aboard their ships means that guests associate the brand with the jewelry company.
