The Latest Controversy: Rowling Attacks Transgender Paralympian Valentina Petrillo
In her latest controversial move, Rowling has directed her ire towards Valentina Petrillo, a visually impaired transgender sprinter who made history as the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the T12 200m and 400m races at the Paralympics.
Petrillo, who transitioned in 2019, expressed gratitude for the welcoming environment she experienced in Paris, describing her Olympic journey as “beautiful.”
However, Rowling’s response to Petrillo’s achievements has been anything but supportive. On September 2, 2024, Rowling took to X (formerly Twitter) to label Petrillo as an “out and proud cheat.”

Rowling compared Petrillo to Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his titles in 2013 after admitting to doping, suggesting that if Petrillo could compete, Armstrong should have his medals reinstated.

She acknowledged the expected backlash but emphasized that Rowling’s views do not affect her love for her life or her sport. Petrillo revealed that she has never read any of the Harry Potter books and is largely indifferent to Rowling’s opinions about her.
