For years, The Walt Disney Company and conservative America have been locked in a bitter culture war. From high-profile political squabbles to constant accusations of pushing a liberal agenda, Disney has been a favorite target for right-leaning critics. However, the days of corporate political posturing appear to be over.

In a shocking and highly visible pivot, Disney’s top leadership—including chief executive officer Josh D’Amaro—recently spent time alongside President Donald Trump, signaling a definitive end to years of animosity.
The Patriot Games Truce
The backdrop for this unexpected reconciliation was President Trump’s inaugural Freedom 250 Patriot Games. The national high school athletic competition served as the ultimate olive branch between Mar-a-Lago and the Magic Kingdom.
The truce was undeniable. Pat McAfee, one of ESPN’s highest-paid and most prominent stars, personally greeted Trump on the tarmac, shaking hands with the President. But sports personalities weren't the only ones making nice. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro were both in attendance at the Patriot Games, standing alongside Trump in a stunning display of unity.
Solidifying the new partnership, the event was officially streamed by ESPN, effectively bridging the gap between Trump's political base and Disney's massive media apparatus. This happy, smiling scene was a far cry from the media giant’s tense history with the President, which previously included Trump demanding the firing of ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.
Erasing the “Woke” Label
By attending the Patriot Games, D’Amaro and Pitaro sent a clear message: Disney and ESPN are abandoning the culture wars.

Critics can no longer easily claim that ESPN is “woke.” Over the past eight years, Jimmy Pitaro has made it explicitly clear that he wants the sports network to avoid the third rail of politics, completely countering the strategy of former ESPN president John Skipper.
To achieve this apolitical stance, ESPN has systematically parted ways with many of its outspoken progressive voices. This exodus has effectively removed the ammunition that conservative critics once used to attack the network.
- Jemele Hill took a buyout and left ESPN in 2018 after her 6:00 p.m. SportsCenter show was canceled.
- The left-leaning Dan Le Batard parted ways with the network in 2021.
- Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre saw their show canceled in 2020 and were gone entirely by 2023.
- Most recently, NFL analyst Ryan Clark was pink-slipped.

In their place, ESPN has elevated talent who appeal to broader or more conservative audiences. Alongside McAfee—who has developed a highly publicized bromance with Trump and frequently hosts him—Stephen A. Smith has become the undisputed face of the network.
The Bottom Line: Business Over Politics
At the end of the day, Disney and ESPN's decision to make peace with Donald Trump comes down to raw mathematics.

With cord-cutting drastically reducing cable television's reach, ESPN's footprint has shrunk significantly. In a politically divided country, Disney simply cannot afford to alienate half of its potential viewership. Trump has won two U.S. presidential elections, proving that his base represents a massive, undeniable segment of the American consumer market. Internal data has shown that fans do not want ESPN to cover politics, and the network is finally listening.
Of course, this pivot is not without detractors. Some critics have mockingly dubbed McAfee as “MAGA-fee,” while others view Disney executives as spineless for seemingly kissing Trump’s ring. Furthermore, all eyes are now on late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, whose contract expires in 2027, to see if this new alliance impacts his future at ABC.
Yet, Disney management is clearly willing to absorb these criticisms to protect its bottom line. The network has realized that it cannot win the culture wars, so it must stake out a middle ground. By standing shoulder to shoulder with the President, Josh D'Amaro has proven that, for Disney, business will always trump politics.
