Just Months After ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Was Released, ‘Star Wars’ Has Confirmed New Mando Series for Disney+

The Mandalorian is heading back to Disney+, but not with the long-discussed fourth season fans once expected.

Lucasfilm has officially announced LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian (2026), an animated special that reimagines moments from all three seasons of the hit live-action series. The project arrives just months after The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) concluded its theatrical run, giving audiences another opportunity to revisit Din Djarin and Grogu's journey in a very different format.

The feature film, directed by Jon Favreau, represented Star Wars‘ return to theaters for the first time since Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Pedro Pascal reprised his role as the Mandalorian alongside Grogu, while newcomers Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White joined the franchise as Colonel Ward and Rotta the Hutt.

Before the movie premiered, Favreau disclosed that work had been done on a fourth season of The Mandalorian. That version of the story, which reportedly would have expanded the New Republic timeline and Grand Admiral Thrawn's growing influence, was ultimately set aside after Lucasfilm chose to continue the saga as a theatrical release. Favreau explained that the studio wanted the movie to welcome newcomers rather than depend on viewers having followed every season of the Disney+ series.

A Mixed Outcome for Star Wars on the Big Screen

Disney entered 2026 hoping The Mandalorian and Grogu would reestablish Star Wars as a dominant theatrical brand.

Instead, the film's commercial run fell short of expectations, with competing low-budget horror titles drawing significant audience attention. Forecasts had already suggested the movie would open below the franchise's historic theatrical highs, and its final worldwide total reflected those tempered expectations.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Mandalorian and Grogu concluded its run with just over $340 million worldwide from a reported production budget of $165 million.

Now LEGO Is Retelling the Entire Story

Rather than continuing the narrative, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian will revisit it from the beginning.

Lucasfilm says the Disney+ special will revisit “your favorite stories and characters from all three seasons” while delivering “unexpected laughs and action-packed fun.” As with earlier LEGO Star Wars productions, the familiar events will be reshaped with comedic storytelling and a faster-paced retelling.

The first promotional artwork focuses on Din Djarin's introduction to Grogu, recreating one of the defining scenes from the live-action series entirely in LEGO animation.

Fans attending D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Experience will receive an advance screening on August 15 ahead of the special's September 2 debut on Disney+. Lucasfilm has not yet released further information regarding the voice cast, runtime, or a complete trailer.

What's Next for Lucasfilm?

The LEGO announcement arrives at a moment when Lucasfilm continues evaluating the future of Star Wars on the big screen.

While The Mandalorian remains one of Disney+'s flagship original series, its theatrical adaptation demonstrated that streaming popularity does not automatically translate into major box office results. That performance has fueled fresh discussion about how the franchise should balance its film ambitions with its streaming success.

Even with that setback, Lucasfilm continues moving forward with several theatrical productions, including Dave Filoni's Star Wars feature and Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter, currently scheduled for release in 2027.

Din Djarin and Grogu's latest live-action adventure is also preparing to reach home audiences. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be available digitally beginning July 21, 2026, followed by 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions featuring behind-the-scenes extras on August 25, 2026.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
