Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Canceled as Square Enix Focuses on KH4

Kingdom Hearts fans just got hit with a major curveball: Kingdom Hearts Missing Link, the long-awaited GPS-based mobile game, has officially been canceled.

The game was set to let players dive into the realm of Scala ad Caelum and take on waves of Heartless in a GPS-based action-RPG experience designed for mobile devices.

The developers concluded that they wouldn’t be able to deliver a long-term experience that would meet player expectations. While the announcement didn’t get into the specifics of what went wrong, the tone made it clear this was a tough call for the team

Square Enix shared the news in a statement posted to the game’s X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing sincere apologies to fans who had been eagerly waiting.

It’s a bit of a heartbreaker, especially for those who participated in the closed beta tests, hoping for a fresh Kingdom Hearts adventure on mobile. But, here’s the good news, it’s not all doom and gloom in the world of Keyblades and convoluted timelines.

At the very end of the cancellation notice, Square Enix threw fans a much-needed lifeline: We are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4.”

Kingdom Hearts 4 marks the next major chapter in the long-running series. While details remain scarce, the game is expected to build on the dramatic reveal from its 2022 trailer, which showed Sora awakening in the mysterious world of Quadratum.

Kingdom Hearts 4 promises a darker tone and more realistic visuals, indicating a significant shift in the franchise’s direction. As video game director Tetsuya Nomura has teased previously, it may conclude the series.

That’s right. While Missing-Link has been shelved, development on the next mainline entry in the series is still chugging along. It’s the first real update we’ve had since early this year, and while it’s not much, it’s a sign of hope for what’s next.

Let’s not forget that Kingdom Hearts 4 was first revealed in September 2022 with a flashy cinematic trailer introducing us to a more realistic-looking Sora waking up in Quadratum, a new mysterious world. Since then, though? Radio silence. Until now.

So, while Missing-Link may be gone, fans can take comfort in knowing that the main adventure is far from over. Dust off your Keyblades—because something big is still coming.

Stay tuned, Keyblade wielders. The next chapter may be taking its time, but it’s definitely on its way.
